In fairness to the Duke, he would have been in his mid 30s when the US entered WWII, which would have been a bit on the old side to enlist.
From wiki: "
Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status (classified as 3-A – family deferment). Wayne repeatedly wrote to John Ford saying he wanted to enlist, on one occasion inquiring whether he could get into Ford's military unit.[39] Wayne did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A (draft eligible), but Republic Studios was emphatically resistant to losing him, since he was their only A-list actor under contract. Herbert J. Yates, president of Republic, threatened Wayne with a lawsuit if he walked away from his contract,[40] and Republic Pictures intervened in the Selective Service process, requesting Wayne's further deferment.[41]
U.S. National Archives records indicate that Wayne, in fact, did make an application[42] to serve in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor to the modern CIA, and had been accepted within the U.S. Army's allotted billet to the OSS. William J. Donovan, OSS commander, wrote Wayne a letter informing him of his acceptance into the Field Photographic Unit as a special forces commando, but the letter went to his estranged wife Josephine's home"

Funny! I'm currently listening to Six Days of War by Michael Oren-- otherwise I would have zero idea what you're talking about. Currently at the end of day 2.
what an insane time, and I had zero idea of the nuances of the politics having grown up in an all-in-on-Israel time.
They got some long winters in Mn.

If you haven't yet, you really gotta read an in-depth analysis of the blunders and arrogance of their opponents, Nasser and Amir especially, and the last-minute beheading (figurative) of Jordan's effectiveness -- their one decent enemy. I'll grant you that I come at it with a strong sense of "there is a God" -- but I suspect that the "circumstances" have been compelling reason for faith for many others out there. It just smacks so much of many Old Testament stories where they were outgunned and outmatched and it was confusion or one simple mistake that led to an unreasonable victory.
That's not to discount their preparation, mind you. They were of singular mind and purpose as far as that goes. "The harder I work the luckier I get" sort of deal.
