Sex Matters: Men Recognize Cars and Women Recognize Living Things Best, Psychological Analysis Finds
ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) — Women are better than men at recognizing living things and men are better than women at recognizing vehicles.
That is the unanticipated result of an analysis Vanderbilt psychologists performed on data from a series of visual recognition tasks collected in the process of developing a new standard test for expertise in object recognition.
Next up: New Study Refutes Earlier Claim: Women in 'Gold Digger' Cohort have enhanced ability to recognize vehicles

With all due respect: Eff you!
On the way to work, the wife yelled at a "Pontiac" to get out of her way.
It was a bright yellow Neon.
Yet, she can ID name brand shoes and purses from across the Mall.
It really is about what you're interested in more than anything. Some people like shoes and purses, etc. Others like cars and airplanes, etc. This is true for both men and women.
Generally speaking, it is a true stereotype but there are some examples that contradict the stereotype much like anything. There are a few girls on here that contradict it and there are plenty of guys out there that have no clue about IDing cars.
Related note: While at Duke of Understeer's house yesterday working on one of his Volvos, his daughter who is 4 years old(I think) was so excited to show us her toy cars. She is going to be an Encyclopedia Britannica when it comes to IDing cars by the time she is 10.

God help her because they all look the same to me anymore.....
Also, WTF are these cars and vehicles you speak of.......I only know of AUTOMOBILES
Wait till you become an airplane spotter and fact dump about said aircraft to anyone within earshot.

Hey! Automotive journalists don't count.....you can probably ID cars better than anyone.
....and yes, I could have summarized it with "Scientists spend grant money reinforcing gender stereotypes."

She already knows about Corvettes and Aston Martins and watches Formula One with me. She has more interest in Barbie's Mustang than Barbie herself!
I'm sticking her in a kart when she turns 6
They didn't test my dad. He calls every yellow car a Bumblebee...until there's an actual yellow and black Camaro in view, then he says nothing
Ahhh yes, Sociology, the intensive study of the painfully obvious.

That's how to raise them right.

As one of my professors used to say: "If you see a sociologist - step on it! "

FTFY.
(ducks rain of broken bottles, bricks and spike heels)
Real men can recognize cars
ftfy
Whatever, more power to chicks with car knowledge!!!!
The title should read, "People are more attuned to the nuances of subjects that generate interest and curiosity."
Ask me about identifying a gun, and this is probably what I'll tell you:
I can tell the difference between a plane and a helicopter, but that's about the most precisely I can identify an aircraft with certainty.

i'm waiting for them stop reinforcing these old gender stereotypes and take on the "white people be all like (something not cool)..., and black people be all like (something cool).." stereotypes that all the comedians on tv talk about...
I'm waiting on the sitcom writers to stop stereotyping all men as glandular driven children who can easily be led around by the small head.
Or the stereotyping of women as manipulative, bossy and scheming.

This. Unfortunately, someone long ago decided this garbage is the very definition of "funny", so you're stuck with it. As a side benefit, if they actually came up with something new and/or funny, they could save money on laugh-trac's.
