I'm usually in favor of allowing people to do what they wish with their vehicles. This, however, should be an automatic court date and impound. It is ridiculously unsafe for everyone else on the road with them.

4.6? 5.4? I don't remember which engine my buddy's older King Ranch had in it, but it was highly sensitive to oil viscosity, something to do with Ford's implementation of variable valve timing maybe?

It's a 2000 4.6, with 225k miles. I've been running 5w-30 since I bought it 98k miles ago. It's definitely been getting worse over miles, just sucks that 1qt per tank and a half is now normal?

In reply to classicJackets (FS) :

Apparently Ford issued a TSB calling for 5W-20 in that engine in all climates. The 5W-30 you have been using might have varnished up the oil control rings to the point that they're stuck in their grooves and no longer scraping the cylinders. This is common on Toyotas when owners use a thicker oil than recommended or don't change it frequently enough. Eventually it results in heavy cylinder wear.

Sidebar: I assumed the "high mileage" oil formulations were a gimmick with extra honey to stop the oil from sneaking past the rings, but evidently they actually have extra detergents to break down varnish around the rings and let them do their job.

Anyway, if your rings are just stuck, you might be able to free them up with some Sea Foam or similar engine flush chemical in the oil before your next oil change. It's worth a try.

I also really like the internal steam cleaning technique of feeding a little water into the intake tract. Get the engine good and hot, hold it at 2500 RPM or so, and feed the water in at a modest rate so it doesn't cause a massive misfire or stall it out. Should result in massive clouds of white steam out the tailpipe and possibly less carbon in the chambers and gunk on the rings.

These may or may not fix anything, but they can't really make it worse. Our old Matrix was going through oil at about a quart every thousand miles and it's using less now after the steam clean. As much oil as you are burning, you don't have a whole lot to lose.

Oil viscosity doesn't cause the rings to stick.   If thick oil caused that, then cars with 0W20 would have no problems smiley

Nobody is claiming that thin oil guarantees free rings.

I recently used GM Top Engine cleaner (aerosol can) on the Hemi in my Jeep GC and it visually removed the carbon from the visible portions of the intake and throttle body and left a cloud of smoke when driving it after that that would have made James Bond proud.

I also used BG EPR in the oil before draining it to replace the oil  pan gasket.

I've only got about 250 miles on it since putting it back together, so I can't say if it helped with oil consumption, but with the oil pan gasket leak being fixed I won't be able to give an accurate assessment, I'll just feel better if I don't have to add between oil changes.

Again, I got all excited because I saw an email from Rock Auto with the subject "availability alert notification" and I thought that meant they finally had the thing I need!

But no.  The alert was that the situation hasn't changed and they still don't have it.  Which, really, is sort of the opposite of an alert.

That's why we're moving after 30 years in our 'little' town...  unrestrained building and a massive influx of transplants has completely changed the character of the community.  Infrastructure is overwhelmed due to poor planning, roads are jammed, etc...  It's a shame, becuase it used to be a really nice place to live.

The only good thing is real estate prices are stupid high due to the influx and lack of inventory, so we should do well when selling our house.

The van windshield washers haven't worked properly in a long time. I'm busy. The rea one works fine. The front, same pump, makes noise and doesn't spray. At first it was just really weak then it stopped. A long time ago. Finally Tunawife asked me to fix it yesterday. I pulled the hoot blanket.

Here's some random internet picture of the routing. Note the fancy white connector with a spring clip on the (connected in this picture) line to the nozzle

Well mine was just electrical tape.

I have no earthly idea who would have been there. We had the windshield replaced once, poorly, so maybe then. It was invovled in a very minor front end collision, but I think that was just the facia. It's a mystery. Anyway some goober decided electrical tape was the fix.

Taylor Swift? Never heard of him.

Lol, actually in all seriousness .......I couldn't name a Taylor Swift song if my life depends on it. I'm sure I've heard one, but no idea on what she does.

I don't think she will be covering Electric Wizard anytime soon so this trend will probably continue

My BIL is actually a good guy. He doesn't believe my ignorance of pop culture is real. He once said something about Katy Perry. I said that I didn't know who that was. He called BS, but I really, at that point, had not even heard her name. Some months (years?) later I was getting into the van and it was on the XM station where it's just ads for some reason, and I heard her name in conjunction with a song, so I texted him "hey, now I know that she is a singer". Just last month she showed up on the home screen at work of the news (we can't change it on one of the browsers so it's MSN or some garbage), so I saw her picture. I texted him again "Hey now I know what she looks like".

It's the same with Swift. I saw her picture somewhere recently. His wife said something something about a football game she went to, and how excited she was about something something. I didn't get it. She looked at me like I grew horns. I don't understand why anyone cares.

Yeah, I have the same problem with The Dancer and my general inability to identify the name/artist of a song without it being something just very iconic/universally known, having multiple-choice answers in front of me, or it being a song/group I personally love. She just can't believe that I do not remember who sang all of these songs- songs that I like and enjoy listening to. She initially assumed that I was just messing with her but- no, I just do not have a good memory for that kind of thing (and many other things, while simultaneously being able to remember a ridiculous amount of largely pointless, useless info/trivia).

I seem to remember eastsideTim at one point when we were in college being confused by the same thing- IIRC he thought that since I was in band that I would be a lot more knowledgeable about music artists. Nope...

The Powers That Be are supposed to start contacting the people in my company who are being laid off today to notify them- I believe that they're supposed to have finished doing so by Wednesday. Those who are getting laid off's last day will be in early November.  I logged on this morning to find an email from our internal training site where all of the online training for things like HR, OPSEC, etc. is done that a training I think has been on my schedule but not due until either the end of the year or possibly even into next year had been changed to being due on that same day in early November. If I do end up being one of the people being laid off, it's just comical that it looks like they berked up and the training site spilled the beans before they could do it officially...

I'm getting close too moving too, sucks because I always assumed the family property would be something I stayed at until I was too old to live in the woods but it's ridiculous.

And it's not just things that effect me that I'm seeing, they hired a school superintendent that literally cannot do the job legally, paid him twice what was the going rate with his contract stipulating that he received free lunches at any school of his choice and other batE36 M3 things and it literally took a 6 month long recall to get him out of office. Literally, could not be accredited to do the job because he's never done anything similar to the job. Weird stuff like that.

So......Arizona, Utah or Wyoming is looking good

I'm pretty sure it was, but I could be wrong- I may be, since I remember it was conversation that happened when a bunch of us were walking from the last house I lived in (when I was in grad school) to the shaved ice place up the street and I know you had graduated before I moved in there (but did come visit on occasion).

can however still pretty quickly tell when someone will post the sheet music/notation for the melody to rickroll someone...

If you want to live away from people, look into WV.  I can almost guarantee you that no one is moving there and things will mostly remained unchanged.

AZ is rapidly filling up with Californians who, unfortunately, try to turn wherever they go into exactly what they fled.  Wyoming is beautiful, but Winter is harsh, and you'd better like wind.  A lot.  Utah is pretty nice outside the Salt Lake metro area.  We decided to stay in AZ for the weather, but are moving to a more rural area.

Seems like the flyover states (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, etc) are due for large-scale development given how rapidly people are filling up the states mentioned above.  I'm sure 20ish years ago no one would have predicted the growth of Idaho and Utah?  Maybe I wrong on that since I'm a right-coaster.
