No, but your expectations are too high. Most people just aren't paying attention to things that aren't directly impacting them.
Should they? Hmm maybe, maybe not. It definitely would be nice and considerate if they did. But if you adjust your expectations you might not be [as] disappointed.

My expectations are that people should be checking their mirrors more than once a drive.
In reply to iansane :
Give them motorcycles. They will learn to check mirrors frequently, or they will conveniently remove themselves from the equation.

When I was getting my international license when I was in HS and we were stationed in Germany, I was told on multiple occasions that if a Polizei (German Policeperson) saw you change lanes on the Autobahn without not just checking your mirrors but also looking over your shoulder into your blind spot, they could and would pull you over and ticket you. That may have been something made up to scare HS'ers (and young GI's), but to this day I still always look over my shoulder before changing lanes.

When you take your driver's test here it's expected that you are constantly checking to the right, left, and your mirrors as you drive. You will fail if you don't
Great, Debby left me a little present in my workshop, so now that it stopped raining I get to use some vacation time to clean up that mess and again try to find out where the water came in as all the obvious entry points seem to be dry.
I know, first world problem and other people had much more damage to their property than a few (tens) of gallons of standing water and hopefully not too many damaged car parts, but I find the little game of "where did it come in this time" after a severe storm a little, err, draining.

The scammers are getting more committed... twice yesterday I thought I was talking to legit buyers, until I got the VIN/title check scam.
I really hate selling cars these days.

i haven't sold a car in a number of years, what is the VIN/title check scam?
GC: I need a price to install two automatic doors that the owner is supplying.
Me: Shoot over the specs on the doors and I'll get you a price.
GC: We don't have any specs beyond them being 14' wide and 8'8" tall.
Me: OK...? Are they impact-rated or shuttered? Who is supplying and installing the glass?
GC: We don't know. Assume the owner is supplying the glass. Assume the doors are impact rated.
Me: OK. Here is your price.
GC: Holy crap! That's expensive! Why are there so many exclusions? Why no warranty?
Me: You want me to price an installation with zero information. I'm going to price it assuming the worst-case scenarios. That means expensive. Then I'm going to exclude everything I'm not specifically supplying. I'm also going to exclude anything you think I should do but don't, like pulling wires for power or wiring your security system. I also don't install glass that I'm not supplying. Add to that, if I'm not supplying the materials, that means no warranty. If your no-name door blows up a week later, tough E36 M3. It's not my problem.
My downstairs bathroom has a wall sconce light fixture above the sink, and a 2x2 fixture in the suspended ceiling, which quit a year or two ago. The wall light was adequate for everything except, apparently, slowing the soap scum and filth everywhere.
New led fixture, and a couple hours of scrubbing.
I hate scrubbing.

They try to get you to get them a 'title check' from a site they provide that is usually designed to give you minimal publicly available info on the car (if even that) and steal your CC info.

Uh, based on the desire, the cars are not moving.
So are we thinking that drivers waiting in still traffic should be constantly looking backwards? Or should they be focusing on the traffic in front of them so that they move when it moves?
This isn't keeping track of everyone around you when you are moving, this is more about the guy sitting in front of you to get out of your way just because they should apparently know what you want to do.

pretty much yeah, I've seen enough videos of semis plowing into stopped cars so that I'm always checking my rearview in case i need to move. And I always start moving promptly on green, because glancing in the mirror shouldn't take your whole focus.

If you don't watch the mirrors when stopped, you are a braver fool than I am. I know it's saved my life once.
55 mph speed zone. I was driving an 81 FB RX-7. I was stopped at the light. Head on a swivel as usual and see the semi coming up behind me not slowing down as quickly as I would like. Then I see smoke billowing from the tires. I glanced both ways, blew the light, and got out of the lane. The truck came through behind me still running better than 40.
I habitually scan all the traffic around me at a light. Front, back, and both sides assuming that everyone is out to kill me. If I'm the last car in the line, I also flash the brake lights continuously if there is a car coming up behind me. There are too many people in this world playing on their damn phones while driving for me to trust anyone on the road.

No, it's about situational awareness and taking a minimum of care to make sure you're not inconveniencing others if you don't have to.
I encounter this all the time in my commute. To the point that as I'm approaching a stoplight with turn lane I move toward the inside of my lane so that I can leave as much space as possible for someone behind to sneak past when we're all stopped. Conversely, if I'm turning, I move promptly all the way into the turn lane so I clear up the through lane as quickly as possible.
It really doesn't take much effort, just a few little observational habits that help make life a little smoother for everyone.
Multi part rant today.
Part 1, I somehow just managed to kick myself in the balls while sitting on my bed.
Part 2, it is now time to shutdown Cornell University. They've published a study saying "to much knowledge is bad for society" because people that "know to much" can act selfishly with that knowledge instead of working for the greater good of everyone else. I'm sorry, what? One of the biggest problems in society today, and in the USA especially, is a lack of knowledge about pretty much anything and everything.
Part 3. This last 6 weeks of chemo is really berkeleying sucking. I'm down to 2 hours of sleep a day maybe, I'm up to 6 trips to the bathroom a day, minimum, after my now 8 days after infusion without going at all, and I'm just berkeleying over it. Having a weird lump on my thigh was WAY easier to deal with than this chemo bullE36 M3. Do not recommend.
Part 4. This is an especially minor rant, but I really wish we'd have tried this Fresh Thyme Market grocery store years ago when we moved here. It's cheap, the quality is amazing, they have great sales at least once a month on high quality meat and seafood, and it really would have been great to know this 4 years ago.

The implication here, is that you give a E36 M3 about other drivers.
There are some new ways of doing things, I presume taught, that bother me. First is the habit of adjusting side mirrors so you can see two lanes over. I believe this caught on because people were not shoulder checking, but it opens up a new and exciting blind spot a bit farther back.
The other is stopping at least a car length behind in traffic, which is fine, if you need to change lanes with a truck speeding behind you. But, when you are stopped with cars ahead and behind, with no chance of leaving your lane, snug up a bit to let people into the lane they need to be in. There may well be through traffic blocked by people who could fit in the turn lane.
And, for chrissakes, learn what this sign means.
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
And learn what this is and how to do it.
Insurance denied coverage for my Stress EKG I had scheduled for Monday. So now that's been canceled, and I am no closer to knowing what's wrong.
I messaged my doctor if there's anything I can do to work around this issue.
berkeleying health insurance companies.
In reply to Duke :
The problem is knowing what the other person wants to do. Are you turning at the intersection, like other people in the right lane or not? Given the light is for the intersection, I would think that the person behind me is turning like I am. So moving would do nothing. Let alone the assumption there is enough room to make it matter anyway.
edit, also, is the following car so close that the turn signals can even be seen, let alone used.
In the end, just too many assumptions going on to immediately think that the driver must move for your sake.
In reply to Toyman! :
That isn't what the poster was talking about. This is normal traffic and they want to make the person in front of them get out of their way.
So let's not get crazy on an extrapolation.

I don't need to know specifically what the car behind me wants to do right then.
I just need to think about what any car behind me is likely to do, and leave space for them to do that if I can.
I don't need to be a mind reader, and besides, most people actually do use their turn signals.
I just need to spend 5 seconds considering the cars around me as I come to a stop, and place my car as best I can.
If you are charging $110 for your cheapest house brand and I can buy a name brand online for $32, we aren't going to be able to do business together.
I will gladly pay a premium for local and prompt service, but when that premium is 3 times the price you have crossed the line. I'll wait a few days.

Same poster.
If you are watching the mirrors you can usually see they need by. I watch the mirrors, stopped or not. I make room for people to get into the turn lanes, need it or not. Sometimes I make room for people who don't need it, but I'd rather err on the side of not being a self-absorbed shiny happy person. It's the courteous thing to do.
