It would work if you pulled the cable out of the body.
Still stupid.
You'd also have to fight the bearing, which I have only ever been able to remove by burning the outer race off so I could cut a notch in the inner to air chisel it until it cracked.
I'll have to remember the idea of safety wiring the spring closed, though. That's genius.
I built a puller for the Nissan version. Toyota is torch time, partly because the retainer/seal ring is about a 15 ton push. Fargin bastiches are tight.
My shop smelled very bad yesterday.
How in the berkeley can this rim be that rusted on?!?!?
Heat, 20lb sledgehammer, a full can of PB Blaster and another of wd40.....nothing working.
I'm at the level that I'm worried about hurting the front end with that many sledgehammer blows. I don't necessarily need the car I'm taking the rims off of to be instantly ready so I'm less worried there but I've never had anywhere near this problem
I even got the rim to almost glowing and threw snow at it to rapidly cool it over and over. I've dropped the car hard without lug nuts on it and even turned the wheel back and forth without lug nuts on the ground and it still didn't break free
I've done myself dirty here, folks.
I took the Freebaru in to get inspected, and the codes aren't set. Ok, that's my fault, it hasn't driven all that far at all since I got it, as I've been getting it roadworthy enough to pass the inspection, and Girl-Spawn hasn't gotten her driver's permit, yet. So, it's just been getting started and moved around the property once a week.
My rant is that I have to turn in the plate for the sold Miata, and get a plate for the Freebaru, and I was hoping to do that in one trip. Nope. I'm going to have to turn in the plate for the Miata and get a temporary driving permit that'll let me drive around for 10 days while I set the codes in the Freebaru, then go BACK to DMV to actually register it.
Two trips to DMV, and I have myself to blame. Ugh.
Ever feel done with people?
I'm 62 years old and I have 34 months left until I retire. I'm done with my coworkers, the bosses and the customers and I've always been one of the TOP sales producers.
I'm ready to move on but it's too early......just leave me alone, get off my lawn.
So what almost nuclear options for wheel removal does everyone got?
Because sledgehammer isn't working. Dropping the car isn't working. Turning the steering wheel without lug nuts on isn't working. Heating the rim up isn't letting go. Heating it up and rapidly cooling it isn't letting go.
I even have drilled a small hole in the hub and repeated the heat, cold, heat, lube, heat, cold about a dozen times and it still won't let go.
I've never had this problem before

Yeah I have and I feel your pain.
My refuge is I live in the middle of nowhere so when I need to recharge there's no one there
In reply to Antihero :
I've heard some people say they leave the lug nuts on, but loose, and drive it into/off of a curb a few times
Haven't done it myself so I can't comment on effectiveness/safety
In reply to gixxeropa :
We are way past safety now lol
The car isn't running at the moment, or that sounds like an idea. I have dropped it a couple feet with loose lug nuts on it though without effect.
Thanks for chiming in too

Use a Jack or a come along to push or pull it off.
In reply to mtn :
I didn't think about a jack, I'll see if I have one that will collapse enough though to get it in there
I have been trying a tanker bar levered off of anything I could get to though. It's about 5 feet long.
I just want the tires off this, the wheels were easy but I have extras around. But they are nearly new nice studded tires dammit

Is there a hole large enough to get a pry bar into and pry against the caliper? Or pry against anything solid? Be it from the front or the rear?
Interesting way to pry
crowbar method
In reply to DjGreggieP :
There is, but it's been ineffective. I have been using a 5 foot long tanker bar and so far nothing.
So apparently we need more torque than a bar I've literally moved cars with. Holy crap.
Current crazy idea: the car lost reverse and I haven't started it in a year but I'm thinking of loosening the lubnuts, chocking the tires so it can't move and seeing if I can get it to at least move forward. The idea is I don't actually want it to move, just move the axles inside the wheel.
Or I nuke it from space

Semi stupid idea: Is there a way to drill and tap the rim in two or three places inside the lug radius? You could then try installing some jacking bolts to push against the rotor to try and break the wheel free. Alternative to tapping the relatively thin wheel metal would be to weld a nut on after drilling a hole in the rim.
In reply to Antihero :
Solid blocking or bar, with a bottle jack on its side to push from the inside of the wheel pushing outward?
You need the largest hammer they sell at Harbor Freight. I call it "I wasn't asking".
Need good hammer technique too. Don't bounce the hammer off of the tire, hit the sucker with force. If the hammer bounces you were doing it wrong.

Minor rant:
I received our AAA home insurance survey form today. On it is a question: "Do you have a pool or spa located at your residence address?" Back in May, we removed our fish pond (they consider it a pool) and I notified them immediately, I fully expected our rates to drop - they said the rate would stay the same. This was back in May.
Regarding the above question on the form, I just had to vent, and called again, explaining, "had a pond, removed it, expected rate to drop, told it would not." AAA confirmed that is true, so then I got to the punch line, "okay, if it makes no difference whether I have a pool or not, why is the question there?" Long pause, then, "I'm sorry sir, it's just a question we put on the form." Gosh, okay, that makes perfect sense then, thanks for clearing that up. Ugh, companies.
I'm almost tempted to wait a few weeks and call again, saying that we just added a pool, will our rate increase... While fun/frustrating, I'm not going to bother.

I'm currently using a 20lb sledge I use for breaking up concrete, it's funny you said that because that's the right technique for concrete destruction too

Not a stupid idea at all, although I don't have a welder to try it.

That is definitely on my list for tomorrow
It is friggin midnight on a weekday and the road you are doing max rpm up and down on your obnoxious crotch rocket is surrounded by residential areas. Just go ahead & wipe out squid.

I've been idly considering selling the Manic Miata and buying something a bit less extreme.
Nick D posted the absolutely perfect replacement on FB EU. It's readily affordable, assuming I can get out of the Miata what I have in it, which is a reasonable proposition.
But I had only been idly considering it, and now suddenly I'm WOT considering it, and I'm not a sudden kind of person.
First World problem, I know.

I think it's interesting how few of these posts get responses. Perhaps the act of typing out one's rant is enough to expunge it from our system, mostly.

I think this is mostly about catharsis. I know that's how I use it. All I want to do is put my annoyance into words, whine about it a bit, and then I feel better.

And speaking of catharsis....
I had another round of interviews on Friday. I think it went okay, but I don't think "okay" is going to be enough to secure the job for me so I'm pretty sure they're going to go with someone else. Which is okay - I made it to the final round and I don't think I'll be rejected out of hand, it's just that while I think I'm a 9, I get the feeling that they interviewed a 10. But that's not the rant. My rant is that I just want them to go ahead and send the rejection so that I can close the chapter and keep looking.

Typing it out helps a lot sometimes in my experience at least.
