I still don't think of myself as old. I'm the same guy I always was. But I know that's not how other people see me.

My dad always said he was a 30 year old trapped in a 70 year old body. With all of the health problems I've been having over the last year, I totally understand, now. It is kinda cool to get the senior discount, though.

The hole in the wall for the medicine cabinet is 19.5" tall by 26 wide.

I can find these dimensions, rotated 90 degrees, but I can't find anything remotely close that the door would open properly.

And according to the wife, upsizing and flush mounting a recessed cabinet won't look right

Whatever, you want a mirror in the bathroom, you find it. I've tried, I've made offers, you can figure it out now

Oh good. The new bedroom ceiling fan is louder than the one it's supposed to replace. And whoever designed this particular model, I hope your dick rots off from the inside.

I hate ceiling fans.  Unless your house has 12 foot ceilings, they suck.

Plus they usually have lights in them, which do nothing except glare and put whatever you want to look at in shadow.

Listening to the IMSA Radio guys here at the track and apparently they're not supposed to call the combustible liquid that they pump into the race cars "fuel" any more.  Now, they pit for "energy".  Even in cars that have absolutely zero hybrid-ness to them.  And the hybrid cars aren't exactly getting plugged in, either.  Those are also taking a combustible liquid.  You know, that stuff that everyone in the freaking English-speaking world calls "fuel", "petrol", "gas", or "gasoline".  I'd even accept "guzzaline".

Is the peacock coverage of the 24 any good? The 1/4 of the race NBC and USA has covered has been poor, especially these final 2 hours have been 10 minutes of coverage and 5 minutes of commercials like clockwork. Never found a legitimate YouTube coverage for the noncable times.

I would bet good money that was a marketing request on behalf of a sponsoring fossil fuel company, they've been using the exact same weird terminology for decades, I'd guess because they want us to think they produce some glowing yellow stuff from a RTS game rather than squeezing dino juice residue out of some kind of future superfund site and then shipping it halfway around the planet and throwing a ton more energy at it before it finally has its way with our wallets and atmosphere.

I just saw an advert for Bottle Rock in Napa. "Prices starting at $100". I think "That's actually not bad. I'd consider that." Then I look at the fine print. That's the reservation cost. Actual tickets start at over 3x that per day.

I fixed the mighty Nissan. It still has a suspected failing slave but that's another can of worms I'm not opening right now. In the process, I started to feel a little ...off.

Spent that night with a light cough and a sore chest. No big deal. Decided to take myself on a good long walk yesterday to keep my exercise up.

That was a giant mistake. Now I have what appears to be a fever, some sort of upper respiratory infection, the aches that go with that, on top of being grossly out of shape and having walked like 10 miles from 0 in the last two days in addition to fixing a car.

I went to school with some fairly serious old money and you are 100% correct.

The vast majority of them were pretty nice kids, too.  It was the new money kids that were pricks.

Good friend manages "wealth" for high net worth individuals. He says you either want to deal with "old money" or the 1st or 2nd generation of "new money". Broadly speaking, 3rd generation has no appreciation for what it took to start the business (1st gen) nor grow the business (2nd gen). They just know they're taking over a successful business, and for whatever reason, they're oftentimes pricks.

I have fairly low profile fans on my 9ft ceilings and they aren't bad.

Otherwise I agree.  I hated them in my last house.  Especially if your ceiling has a slope.  My last house had a great vaulted ceiling in the main room, and one in the master bedroom, and both had a ceiling fan dangling down low enough to ruin the perception of space.

Easier to quote both of you than separate it.

I don't mind the ceiling fans on the ceiling. At least I don't need to duck to avoid them at this house, and with the hard 180s into the bedrooms, they're kind of necessary for air flow

What I do mind is working overhead for extended periods. I didn't like it before last years muscle destroying chemo sessions, it really sucks now.

What really gets me this time though, is the ceiling hugger we put in our bedroom. Designed in such a way that you CANNOT put it up or take it down without disassembling the entire ducking thing including the blades, which they weren't even nice enough to put some kind of screen holder in.

Well something inside it, most likely a wire nut, is making contact with the body of the fan. So I have to take the entire thing apart to bend a wire out of the way, then put it all back together again and hope nothing else slips down to rattle.

Except the way the light kit was designed, I need to add a second joint to my first finger knuckles to move get the set screws off of the lamp shade. The light kit has to come off to get the blades off, which need to come off to get the cover off to bend the wire.

At least the one in the dining room could be fully assembled before putting up and can come down fully assembled.

Whatever 5th world engineering school dropout designed this fan has never seen a human hand before, and whatever mental midget thought it would be a good idea to make for sale is just a sadistic bastard whom I'd actually like to buy a drink for being so evil.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your achievements, or with being pleased at what you've accomplished. Self-congratulatory grandstanding, on the other hand...

Applied for a job a while back. Had an interview last week. Thought it went well. Thought it mildly curious they never wanted a resume or really cared about relevant work experience. Asked about that, they said they can work with training people, but they really care about making sure that the staff gets along with each other. Ok, that seems fine. This wasn't exactly a rocket surgeon type job, this was literally to get me out of the house.

Got a denial today. I think it actually hurts more that now I think they don't think I'd get along with their group than I wouldn't be able to perform the job functions, especially after I believe (or I felt like) the interview went well. Seemed like we had a lot in common. Part of me wants to ask ??? But at the same time they would likely be a waste of energy and I'm not going to do any of that. Guess we just move along.

When I decided to leave my job of 21 years I interviewed for a position that should have been a slam dunk. The dept. manager was in the interview and said, wow, you have the perfect qualifications, and he was right. The HR lady asked if I was emotionally prepared to leave a job of 20 years. WTF?  I told her yes, and thought the interview generally went well, but decided the place was a bit of a E36 M3 hole and a longer drive than I would have preferred. I got an email a week later thanking me, but saying that I probably wasn't a good fit because they were looking for a millwright.  I am a millwright and had perfect qualifications for the job.  Most of my HR experiences have been some variation of that.

Don't beat yourself up, they're idiots.

Having recently retired from a career of almost 30 years, I don't have a lot of recent experience job hunting, but my experiences over the last decade or so of my career lead me to believe that many managers are much more interested in 'malleable' and 'compliant' employees than they are in capable, confident, and experienced ones.  As a supervisor, my efforts to create competent, efficient and confident employees were mostly met with skepticism and scorn by upper management.
