I moved to a new hose manufacturer and a distributor sales manager called me excited to talk and said I was recommended and we should meet and discuss "making more money together".

I go on this sales call hoping this distributor would start buying more of my product when he starts the meeting with "tell me about yourself".......then I realize this is an interview and not a sales call.

So I kept it brief and left - later I declined the job but hoped to keep the door for more hose sales. I felt like a complete moron.

When I decided to leave my job of 21 years I interviewed for a position that should have been a slam dunk. The dept. manager was in the interview and said, wow, you have the perfect qualifications, and he was right. The HR lady asked if I was emotionally prepared to leave a job of 20 years. WTF?  I told her yes, and thought the interview generally went well, but decided the place was a bit of a E36 M3 hole and a longer drive than I would have preferred. I got an email a week later thanking me, but saying that I probably wasn't a good fit because they were looking for a millwright.  I am a millwright and had perfect qualifications for the job.  Most of my HR experiences have been some variation of that.

Don't beat yourself up, they're idiots.

I'm not worried about it, it just would have been super easy. It was within walking distance. Like it could not have made my life any more simple. Oh well. Onto the next I suppose.

Applied for a job a while back. Had an interview last week. Thought it went well. Thought it mildly curious they never wanted a resume or really cared about relevant work experience. Asked about that, they said they can work with training people, but they really care about making sure that the staff gets along with each other...

Got a denial today. ...

That sounds like code for, "We have always been planning to fill this position from someone already on staff, but we are required to post a job listing and interview a minimum quota of candidates."

On January 13th I unexpectedly had to put Ollie down. He had a few age related problems but was generally happy and healthy. He had something on his head that I assumed was just stuck in his fur that he picked up in the yard. I gave him a bath and it was a growth that burst and bled pretty bad.  The next day his vet checked it out, said it was infected and while she could try and remove it Ollie wasn't likely to survive the procedure.  We made the decision to let him go rather than let it get worse.  He walked in happy, he loved seeing the vet, he wagged his tail most of the visit, then lied down for the vet.  She explained why it was good for him and how combined with the other infection we couldn't get under control and the worsening dementia his quality of life was going to decline rapidly, but I still feel guilty doing it like that. I hate that I didn't do anything special for him and it was just a routine day he didn't survive. I knew it was coming, he had a bad stretch before Christmas where I thought we'd lose him, but he bounced back and I was hoping for more time.

I did have an odd plot twist on this process. I've been attempting to get a job somewhere within Disney for a while now, just because the benefits are great and swmbo is already there so we could share a commute. I've also been denied about a million times because they hire within, obviously - and it's hard out there right now.

As I was applying for THIS job, the Disney sent me a "thanks for applying!" Notice indicating id applied for a job. Only problem was, I hadn't applied for a job recently and all the applications I had put in has been closed out. So I go to my dashboard there and check, and they've un-denied one of my applications and reopened it????? So that's a thing.

Just checking the boxes for when they apply for the H1B VISA holder that will fill the job instead.

Went to bed last night comforted that I had found a solution for part of the E36 M3show that has been 2025 so far. A solution I'd actually used in the past with success.

Upon further investigation in this situation it won't work due to a decision I made a decade ago. There were roughly 5 choices, I picked the one that won't help me now. That tracks.

Today's Sword of Damocles hanging over my head is whether or not my kid picked up the flu from a fellow Scout camping trip carpool rider on Sunday. They rode in the same car but not next to each other, so here is hope. But lately hope is getting the same reliability as a Masarati BiTurbo.

It's just been one thing after another every....single....day....this....year.

Sorry about Ollie.  Man, those dogs really break your heart don't they?  And you did the right thing.  I went through something similar about 7 years ago with my black lab.  It was her time to go, but I was having a hard time taking her in.  Looking back, it was 100% the right thing to do to end her suffering and further rapid decline.

In the fine print, buried somewhere in the system ,  is the time clock policy. I was explained to me on the day I was hired, 2 years ago.

Turns out  clocking in early doesn't get you any more money than clocking in exactly at 3:30. All the extra minutes that I was working before 3:30 was free labor. I might have caught this on my pay stub early on...but I've never seen one. Not one in 2 years. I cant access the paycheck information. HR knows, expresses concern every single time I mention it, and...that's it. The concern ends as soon as I leave the room.

I'm pretty pissed. One thing is for sure, I'm not doing E36 M3 until exactly 3:30. I'm not getting paid for it? Berk you.

I worked retail in college and the magic quarter hour was paid at the 8th minute.

Store closed at 9:30pm and I worked in Paint at the far end of the store.  Walk slowly and punch out at 9:38pm?  Get paid until 9:45pm.

We mainly did it to annoy the store assistant manager.

To say that I've been somewhat displeased with my job for a while now is an understatement.  I've been actively looking for something else, but it's AI warfare out there and I foolishly have let my network shrink over the last couple years.  So I'm brushing off all the old contacts and making some new ones and slowly-but-surely getting this whole process moving.  I figured that perhaps there was a chance that maybe the career advancement that I am looking for was closer than I thought, so I took the opportunity of the corporate mandate to write our own goals for 2025.  Emailing my manager and his manager, I laid out that I needed to make the next step in my career path, put forth the list of accomplishments that I've had in the last few years using actual metrics and numbers (e.g., I figured out a way to save us $2m/yr on costs for this service and I created a product that brings in $200k+ monthly recurring revenue, etc etc).  I made it clear that I wasn't asking for a hand out or a reward but that I was asking to be given a lot more work and I asked for guidance on what opportunities might be there for me and what their expectations were of me to achieve those opportunities so that I could write some effective goals for 2025.

That was two weeks ago.  While my manager's manager has sent me other emails asking me to do this menial task or to provide that other information, I have gotten absolutely zero response.  I haven't even gotten a grinberkeley answer like "hey, that's great, we're going to have a lot of challenges this year and I'm sure that we're going to find an opportunity for you".  Absolute and total silence.

The upside, if you can call it that, is that I now have confirmation of what I already knew.

Might want to report that to the labor board, because in Illinois that is illegal.

Under the Minimum Wage Law and the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act, an employer is obligated to pay an employee for all time worked. For both salaried and hourly employees, if a portion of the week is not completed, the entire salary amount is not due. However, the employee may enter into an agreement with their employer to use some kind of benefit time for those days not worked (vacation, sick, PTO, etc.).

I should be more clear. I can clock in early, but I'm not expected to begin working until 3:30. I was under the belief that I'm punched in, so I'm on the clock. I should begin working.
