Well, with oil down below $70 a barrel, I suspect motor oil prices might be coming down soon.

I hated walmart until I found out 2 things..

1. Their sustainability push is gigantic. They are reducing energy consumption across the board. Now they are doing it for the economic and marketing gains but.. it shows you that sustainability can be profitable.

2. They are the US's largest puchaser of local produce. Their stores try to buy local.

Our waste oil furnace at work works well, but the burner requires a complete rebuild yearly. Plenty of people are looking for used oil. Uhhhh, why? Because they offer decent products at good prices, add a crapload of revenue to the local economy via taxes, and typically provide several thousand temporary jobs during construction, followed up with hundreds of permanent jobs?

ignorant's right on the money with this one.

The Supercenters down here are one of the largest buyers of local produce. Also, if you walk through one of their stores, every cardboard box is marked 'Property of Wal Mart, Not To Be Discarded', they recycle a tremendous amount of stuff.

Additionally, the people who bitch the most about their insurance plans etc are generally 1) not employed by WalMart and 2) many times are the same people who try to knock you down on your prices anyway.

So that tells me that 1) they do not know anything about Wal Mart's policies first hand and 2) they are not willing to pay the extra to make sure a company can provide better benefits for their employees. That makes them part of the problem.

I personally doubt it. It seemed to take a long time for motor oil prices to go up relative to fuel prices. I would bet that it will take a similarly long time to come back down. There's got to be a lot more lead time on motor oil than gasoline, for some reason :)

I usually get the synthetic Rotella 5W-40 at Autozone for $20 per gallon. This time I got Valvoline racing 20W50 for $3.99 per, since I wanted to try something thicker, and they don't have any Mobil 1 in a 20W50 that isn't some "lots of sealers for your aged heap of crap" specialty oil.

I've been using Valvoline Synthetic from O'Reilly's (Memphis based chain) - it's regularly as low as $1.99 with a coupon.

I get regular Mobil1 15W50 in the 5qt. at wallmart, no seal sweller and snake oil hoo ha.

Oddly enough, auto parts stores usually have the worst oil prices. They also tend to sell it by the gallon instead of a 5 quart jug, which is incredibly annoying as every car I've changed the oil on has taken 4 quarts and change.

So yeah, wal-mart ftw.

But my cars all take FOUR quarts per change. One of 'em doesn't burn or leak any, the other one goes a quart overfull after 2000 miles, so that extra quart does me no good and probably just ends up leaking all over the place in the basement.

Plus, I take issue with the big store trend of having just enough cashiers on duty to make a 10-15 minute wait for people in line. I am not that patient. I want to pick up the stuff, pay for it, leave, and be on with my life. That's worth an extra five bucks to me.

I paid $7.15 for a quart of Mobil 1 10w30 just last week, I was amazed. If it's fully-synthetic oil, why does it's price go up when the price of oil does?

It is synthesized, but the chemicals they use to synthesize it still come out of the ground.

IIRC almost all synthetic motor oils are made with natural gas as the feedstock.
