I know it's been said, and I also know that it's not for everyone, but a rental business seems like it could do the trick quite well.
What about 3D printing? I've run exactly no numbers on this but it seems like lots of folks have cheapy $500 ish printers that have questionable quality that ultimately wind up collecting dust, maybe going something more middle of the road and then offering to print for a fee would appeal?
Aside from the learning curve to setup prints and printer setup seems like once you have it dialed in it'd be pretty hands off, since stuff takes time to print it's not quite like ebay where the expectation is next day shipping, you could have a week long turn around time easily, it could run bigger more complex prints while you're gone, come home to a finished part, pack it up and ship it out.
^What do you mean by 'middle of the road'?
There are already like a billion companies that do that with pretty good printers, I can't imagine trying to enter that market in your spare time for side income.

Work just got a $3500 Raise3d N2 Plus and it's got some silly tolerance down to like 10 microns. I've seen some of the stuff it prints and immediately wished I had access to it for various personal projects
