Here's my old thread about motorsports opportunities in Milwaukee: ICE RACING
It seems that as far as midsize cities go, Milwaukee is pretty cool. I'm from Chicago but have also lived a few years each in Atlanta and now Pittsburgh, and daily life in a smaller city like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee is just so much easier and cheaper. I would be hard pressed to go back to a huge city again.

Someday I plan on spending my Summers in Wisconsin for that very reason.
My goal is to end up living in Door County, Wisconsin all summer. It is the Cape Cod of the Midwest.
My bro's job took him to a bird seed company in Appleton and he rented a house near Road America (Plymouth)for 3 seasons (they kicked him out in the summer to rent to the race teams). He would let me know that during the spring/fall weekends he could hear the cars racing around the track.

Blah way too touristy. Give me da UP!
But I am marrying into a Door County family, so I guess I should get used to it. For now, anyways. (Everyone: Do not go into a vacation home with family without a detailed exit strategy. Please)

I'm with mtn, UP all the way. I'm on the very northern most part of Lake Michigan and get to enjoy everything good about the lake and that part of the world without the flocks of tourists.
Hhmm, I'm a huge proponent of Mi, but for me Door county over the UP. But Leelanau Co. Mi all the way over either

See, the thing for me about Door County is that I can rent a house there for a week, and it will cost $750, be ten feet from another rental, and not be on the water. I can go across the bay (19 miles!!) and we're in a place that is $650 a week, on the same water, and without the hordes of tourists. Admittedly it is a blue collar town, but it is still much better bang for you buck. Not to mention the fact that it is actually possible to buy a vacation home there for a reasonable price.
As far as Leelanau Co., that is too far from Chicago to consider

Peninsular state park camping. In the woods, bike into Fish Creek. Easy access to 42. That or rent a house not right on the water. We had a place last time just off 42, 2 mins to Fish Creek, 5 mins from Egg harbor for $1,000 that fitted two families for a week, total of 9 people. Never saw another soul while at the house.
And if I've managed to go to Door County I think 4 times in the last 12 years from SE Michigan then Leelanau county definitly isn't too far for you. Get your lazy ass over to Michigan for a chance you slacker!
Last Door co. trip we headed round the bottom of lake Mi on the way out, spending time in Chi town, then on to Door Co. On the way home we went north through the UP and back down. MAke a trip of it. If I can spend my $;s in your state you can at least resiprocate and spend some in mine!
3 more roundy round tracks on the east side. Flat rock, Auto City, and Owosso. Plus MIS and 2 drag strips, Milan and Lapeer.

Hey, I do spend money in your state! I'm just spending it on the other half of your state
To hit your points, I don't like camping. I like roughing it right until I have to sleep outdoors without access to a shower, should I need it. And I want to be on the water. I like to be out fishing/tubing/whatever, drive the boat in, and stop at home for a quick bite, and go back out without worrying about where I am going to leave my boat and how long it will take to get back out there.
As for the "too far" thing, my family is in the north/northwest suburbs of Chicago. Leaving on a Friday afternoon, we can get to our place in Menominee (which is just barely in the UP!) in less than 4 hours. Leaving on a Friday afternoon, it would take 7 hours to get through to Traverse City.
But none of this helps the OP.
In reply to mtn:
Bob Costas both Palatine and Mundelein are weekend trips for us. Glad you're spending money in Mi.
Back to the OP. Either place is fine

Oh, I wouldn't say that...... the HAWK vintage race weekend at Road America is pretty spectacular. It's one of my favorite events of the year.

WI has cheese curds. This seems pretty simple.

Kenosha has Bobby Nelson's Cheese Shop - owned by a famous wrestler. Claim to the "full nelson" and "half nelson".

I see your HAWK vintage weekend and raise you:
The Woodward Dream Cruise:
Meadow Brook Concours:
Waterford Hills:
The Henry Ford Museum:
The Lingenfelter Collection:
Milan Dragway:
Flat Rock Speedway:
Need I go on? Because I can if you want.
But Michigan didn't have Broadway Bob from Great Lakes Dragaway; Union Grove.....
I give up - Michigan has Bob Seger - there is no better......

But Michigan bred E.J. Potter, the "Michigan Madman"
Most famous for his clutchless direct drive V8 Motorcycle drag/smoke passes. Get it up to ~100mph wheel speed and kick it off the stand.
He also crammed Allison power into many things.
amongst other crazy ideas...
oh, wait - does Michigan have a muskie museum?
oh, wait - Detroit has the giant tire AND Bob Seger.....
