I'm chained to the computer all weekend – so much work to do. Ain't complaining though, as a freelancer, it means I not only pay the mortgage this month but I get to eat too! Currently listening to Cat Stevens. Dang, I forgot what a great songwriter he really was. Peace Train, Father & Son... Liza, Liza... wow, some music really is timeless.

I have the soundtrack to the "Last of the Mohicans" at work. When I am stressed out I put it on and it helps to calm me down.

The "Fellowship..." sound track was good backround music for school work, and the movies were good while doing art projects.

Cash and Alabama are my go to for working on cars.

I don't if this works for desk work, but when I'm working in the garage I like to listen to P-Funk. It's impossible to get pissed off while listening to P-Funk.

I have tunes on all the time. At work it's usually the Deep Tracks station on the satellite. In the garage it's the Boneyard.

Doing demolition work on home project Ministry works.

If the streaming audio at work cuts out, I stock some MP3's to make it through the day. On the mellow end of the scale Steely Dan. Sometimes The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Chicago through the Terry Kath era. Blood, Sweat, & Tears.

The other day I played Deep Purple's In Rock. Not mellow, but either is the project I've been working on.

I describe their music to my students as "if all the great things in life could manifest themselves in music, the result would be p-funk"

I get a hankering for some artists, and pick playlists off You Tube, and leave the window open on my second monitor. Worked through some 20 or so Cat Stevens, then onto some vintage Springsteen. Love hearing some of y'all's choices, lets me discover some new music :-)

There's someone here who has done a bunch of "download of the day" posts. Seems like an idiot, though.

You could probably use "download of the day" as search keywords.

Try Pandora for the new music discovering - if you can listen to it north of the border. It's a great way to pick up some new artists.

When I play music at work, the only time I get complaints from coworkers is when I play Deep Purple. Not because it sucks, but because I keep turning it up louder and louder. You have to, Deep Purple is not background music.

I can listen to music when I'm wrenching (usually the local classical station) but not when I'm at work. Too distracting.

Playlist?

I was stuck on the bench all day building cylinder heads, and this is what I listened to.

Give it a try.

I listen to metal pretty much 24/7. So I am not contributing to this thread in the least, as my MP3 player has stuff that is downright horrifying to anyone who doesn't listen to it regularly.

try a DIY Pandora station, I've been on the road for like 3 weeks now - have molded my perfect Pandora mix. Muse to afghan whigs to ani difranco to underworld. phone streams it I'm the rental car, hotel, job site.

I would probably go crazy without my Pandora mix & elysian's AK-47 malt liquor :)

Here's some of my favorite paper-writing music: Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Do Make Say Think, Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, among many others.

I was at work yesterday, mucking around with bicycles, when Big Audio Dynamite's 'Rush' started playing on the radio. What a great song that is. Sounds very dated today, but it isn't any less catchy .

All good paper-writing music, that. I can't concentrate with non-instrumental stuff playing. See also, Maserati.

+5 for Pandora. It's great for both background music and discovering new stuff. I also keep two particular playlists in Winamp - 'Get the Juices Flowing' and 'Loud.' The first is to help me get started with my day, and the second is ideal for outdoor labor like stacking firewood.

I used to write papers to Miles Davis--especially "Bitches Brew"
