Yes I know the reasons why, especially since it's 5PM right now. No I don't need them that badly.

I've shipped $3500+ packages overnight, guranteed by 10am delivery for work on several occasions. That was for parcels roughly 24x24x36 inches and maybe 25-30 pounds. Sometimes it's just cheaper to pay the man than miss a deadline.

We bought a plane ticket for a prototype Ethernet switch once, in order to get it to Interop in time for a demo the next day.

I worked with a guy who been a electronic repair tech in a hospital. He told me there were a few times when a key part failed on an MRI machine or some other diagnostic equipment. No one batted an eye at priority one express overnight shipping cost because they needed the equipment back onn line ASAP.

I've done that with a carry-on full of airplane parts. That tends to raise some eyebrows in security.

Man, and I got irksome when I had to shell out $90 for 3-day shipping to get a clutch here from California before the weekend

I setup an expedited one way (cargo plane) for $650K to get gas turbine components from Ohio to Washington in a hurry.  It stung but was better than $2MM in liquidated damages if the unit wasn't running by the contract date.

I work in automotive and we sometimes have to do that to expedite a few hundred parts at a time... several times a day until we catch up. And it's still cheaper than paying the late fine

How is it that you have a "ground" option if its coming from Japan?

I've heard about this from various industries, but I'm always curious how it works.

I assume a company rep flies the part out, but I've been surprised I the past.

Does someone go with it or just drop the item off with airport staff and hope it gets where it needs to?

Although an overnight delivery business is sounding rather profitable for the right location.

The way we used to handle it with prototype aircraft parts was to book a round trip ticket for the same day and have another company rep meet you at the airport with the parts.

Typically we'd get stuff from San Diego and someone would fly it up using the company Queen Air but if it was coming from Spanish Forks or if it was going overseas we'd hand carry them.

If you know a Commercial pilot I'm an A&P. We can make that happen...

The best I have ever had done is to have a plane chartered to get a frequency drive from Boise to Vancouver to get a piece of production equipment running again.  I was at work until about 3 am on that particular occasion getting the drive installed, programmed, and then holding the operators hand on startup.
