I tell my students:

"Everybody gets one accident. Try to put that off for as long as possible. And when you finally have your first accident, ~learn~ from it, or you are going to keep having more accidents until you do."

At least he's ok. Unless you've already killed him.

I am unsure of your year but guessed '00. www.rockauto.com sells the whole bumper skin, unpainted, primered for $170. Another $100 for the grill.

Not seeing the side, it is hard to say if it needs more.

I had my license less than 30 minutes when I had my first accident on the way home from the DMV.

You are more fortunate than my parents.

That was 35 years ago. Yes, SkinnyG, I learned from it (never had another accident).

Sorry about your car.

The damage isnt the big deal, the stupidity of how he did it is what gets me, right in front if me too. He is alright, thankfully no airbag deployment

I got pulled over for speeding on the way to my driving test. I had my learner's permit which required that I be accompanied by a licensed driver. My mother was with me and the cop had to point out her license had expired.I asked the cop who he would like to see drive the car further.

The teenager who backed into my Mustang last year had his license for less than 3 days. I like to think my yelling "Give me your insurance info before I rip your berkeleying lungs out" scared him enough into learning from his mistake.

I didn't have a license (I was 13) when I backed my dad's freshly waxed '74 Charger out of the garage. I cut the wheel early and smashed the front fender into the side of the doorway. Not only did I bust up the fender - I broke the garage.

I lived.

The car is an easy fix - the real question is, did he bust the fire hydrant? That's hilarious when it happens to someone else. When it happens to you, not so much.

Yeah, I came in here expecting to see a plume of water shooting into the air.

Since everyone else is mentioning it, IIRC, I made it ten days. Was backing out of a parking spot, and cutting the wheel, and the guy next to me opened the car door on his Cavalier. Caught my metal bumper, and I peeled it back.

EDIT: One thing I had to learn myself that didn't get taught well in drivers ed, IMHO, was methods for understanding exactly where the edges of your car are. I'm still not perfect at it, especially when I hop in an unfamiliar car, but am way better than when I was a teenager.

To the best of my knowledge (I was a passenger at the time) hydrants are designed to break away when hit but the valve is way down in the ground (prevents freezing) actuated by a rod that the FD twists on top.

This means that there should not be a gusher when you knock one over.

Hold on, he waited until he was 18 to get his license? I'm not judging, but I'm always a little surprised to hear of kids waiting years after their eligible. Although in this day and age I guess I shouldn't be.

I still haven't caused a collision, but I've had people run into me - 4 times in fact to the tune of 2 totaled cars.

My stepson had his first DURING HIS DRIVING TEST. The test was in San Jac. park (HOU) and the park ranger backed into him. Apparently if you get in an accident during your driving test, that is an automatic fail, regardless of the fault.

In reply to Matt B: I didn't get my license until I was 23. Just couldn't afford the insurance.

Some states have made them wait that long lately......

Yeah, this happened to a girl in my drivers ed class. We were both actually in the same car. I took mine, got the highest score they had seen yet (marked off only for not looking at mirrors enough).

She went after me, and the last bit of the exam was pulling into a parking spot, reversing out, and then parking it again in the garage that they kept the cars in. She had no marks off through the entire exam, but when she parked it, she was just putting it in reverse (we were stopped) and we feel a bump. Somebody parked behind us didn't put the parking brake on, and she failed.

I put my moms Protege in the ditch about an hour after getting my drivers licence. Icy, unplowed and twisty backroad, unskilled yet very determined and confident 16 year with a buddy and 2 girls in the car=me going into the ditch backwards after finding out that no matter how much WRC I watch, Colin Mcraes skills do not not magically come through the TV. I ripped the front bumper cover off and a buddy towed me out with his moms SUV....going home, I almost didn't see my 17th b-day.
