I realize that we are all home more and we are all watching more, but...  

I have an old Roku SE (model 2710) that seems to be from Black Friday 2013 that we pull Amazon Video, Netflix and recently Disney+ through.  OMG, is the Disney slow.  If you search for a show, it just spins and spins waiting and thinking.  I do not have these same problems with Amazon Video or Netflix.  

The questions I have are:

  • Are you all experiencing the same radical slowness from Disney+?
  • Could my problem be the old Roku and not Disney?

Just for clarification, for me, Disney+ is not sometimes slow or occasionally slow but rather, always slow.  It has come to the point where I hate it when my kid chooses something that requires me to go to Disney+.

Kids been watching it last few weeks. We don't pay for it, a friend gave us their password 

so kids do Netflix or disney + 

no issues at all here with speed on the west coast 

we use google chromecast-2.5 years old 

 

Our TV is 6.5 years old.

No, but I have noticed recently that our netflix on our Apple TV - 2 years old maybe - is slow recently. I can scroll through, and it is scrolling behind hte scenes, but I have to wait a minute for the display to catch up. 

 

Pretty annoyed with it, especially considering it is working great on the Amazon Firestick at 1/8 the cost.

I've got mine via fire stick- no reported problems thusfar.

I have the Amazon Fire Cube........honestly for what it costs, I haven't been happy with it's performance, especially on Hulu, ever since we got it last year.

Can it really be that hard to build something that will process the data coming more quickly?

Our Disney+ on a couple year old Roku seems to be running just fine.

 

And BtW, if you have Disney+, Gravity Falls is awesome. Also, we dont have kids....

Remember that certain apps are made for certain specs of the device. This is partially why Roku can have some blazing speeds for some of its apps - the app developers made them specifically for the newest generation of Roku devices. 

 

I too have an old Roku. You can't really browse content. You gotta know what your watchin and head straight to it. I think I click "ok" at least 6 times to watch something on the PBS app and there is significant lag time in between each.

Works fine on our Roku 2 via wireless.

If you're concerned, you can delete the app and redownload it or even wipe the Roku back to factory specs and start over from scratch.

Aside from those already mentioned: Shop Class, Imagineering, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and Lost Cities with Albert Lin are all pretty fun and/or awesome.

We have kids, but we limit their screen time, so I got D+ for myself mostly due to the SW and Marvel content (Mando FTW!)

Okay, then the ole Roku is probably suspect. 

Time to shop for replacement. Most of what we watch is Amazon does that then mean a Amazon brand device could be best for us?

There's an argument to be made for a newer Roku, as they have a lot of features found on the Fire Stick, Chromecast, etc. but you aren't locked in someone's ecosystem.  I have a streaming stick plus and it's displaced the Chromecast as the preferred streaming device.

Amazon Cube is getting lots of good press, but its pricey and invasive from a security standpoint. 

 

Roku Stick+ always fairs well in reviews. My issue with Roku products is that they quickly become outdated (hardware wise) and are notoriously good at bricking themselves. I've already lost 2/3 of my Roku devices to them randomly quitting. Roku is, however, rather agnostic when it comes to streaming services. They also have great software and app support. The fact that our 8 year old devices can still get brand new apps is a testament to that "service agnostic" Roku enviroment. 

The Amazon Fire Stick and Cube are not agnostic. From what I understand, you really get the feeling they want you to watch nothing but Amazon Prime. However, one cool thing it does do is put stuff you regularly watched first and foremost. If you've got the CBS All Access app and watch Picard every week, then its going to put Picard front and center. Outside of that, however, it will always suggest media from the Amazon Prime library as alternatives. Their hardware is apparently better, though. 

Chromecast is interesting. Its cheap, relatively speedy, but it also does things differently than other devices. You download an app to your mobile device (phone, ipad, computer) and then use that as the controller for what stuff you want to play on the TV (hooked up via Chromecast).

I've been having more trouble getting the app to connect to my tv the last few weeks, or months, I can't keep track of time anymore. I doubt this has much to do with your problem but I think the app updates haven't helped it much.

Our Roku is around 5 years old, but I have it connected with an Ethernet cable, and D+ is working just fine.  MotorTrend On Demand on the other hand gets slower the longer you use it.

Yes!  Our disney+ is constantly buffering.

We had an original version Roku that finally couldn't be updated so we just replaced it with the newest one.  Got it at Wal-Mart, was the cheapest price.  The new one has a lot more options than the first model.

We also have fiber optic internet, pay for the lowest speed which is plenty fast enough for us byt during this pandemic, our provider upped us to the max speed for free for two months.  Score!

I've got the FireTV (the one that dangles off the back of the TV). Disney+ was so slow that I couldn't use it, although that was right around launch time. Overall not super happy with the FireTV but it mostly works so I'll keep using it for now.
