Now, on to stuff that matters. Remington 870 Express, 28" barrel, 12 ga., pump action. Got it at the York Gun Show. It shows very little wear, only cosmetic stuff on the stock, the metal is in great shape. I've also read that this is the best-selling shotgun ever, so it shouldn't be hard to find parts/knowledge on it.

It is raining and crappy outside today. Otherwise I would be at a range right now using it. Never shot an 870, but I've shot it's semi-auto brother, the 1100, many times. I've also used a pump before, I like it better than semi-auto, even though it's slower. Should make skeet shooting a challenge too

Any other shotgun guys here? And better yet, any Central PA people that can tell me a decent place to shoot this thing?

remove 10" from the barrel and replace the stock with a smaller unit...

Anyhow, I like it.

Personally, I want something a little easier to wield for home protection...AKA piece of mind. And dont worry, I plan on taking a full on instruction/safety course PRIOR to purchase.

The express barrels will have one less ream step in the bore finishing and the reciver will have less quality finishing work.. Otherwise same as a more expensive 870..

now.. they're solid as hell.

We were having all kinds of vent rib weld issues when I was there a long time ago. So if it's crooked then it's not my fault.. Hehehe.

So there are gun weilding Libs besides me and Iggy. My first was an ithaca .22 saddle gun when i was 12. I'm currently looking into either a hi-point 9 or 12 ga for a tac build.

I would suggest an extended mag and shorter barrel so it can function a little better for home-defense (if that's what you're going for). Mine can hold 7 shells and the barrel only sticks out a little beyond the end of the mag (it's a legitimate barrel too, not some home-brewed sawed-off). The short barrel also makes it into one LOUD boom-stick too, so if you miss it'll still scare the E36 M3 out of the baddies.

There are a million aftermarket parts available for the 870. You can build it into anything you want it to be. It's the Miata of shotguns.

What Woody said!!! I have an 870 also. There are so much aftermarket goodies for 870's that it's about impossible to list them all. Carbon fiber stocks, extended mags folding/collapsable stocks, etc Barrels replace easily also and come in a variety of lengths and chokes, a slug barrel with sights is available. They shoot well, have fun.

I used an 870 in the military and my dad carried one in Vietnam. Not as flashy as some but works EVERY time. Having used one with a pistol grip only I can say never again! I just bought a late sixties 1100 and am just waiting to replace the gas rings before heading out to shoot sporting clays.

Skeet is silly fun btw.. Try to find a place that has a proper setup with houses.

Most fun i've ever had with a gun... I want to try sporting clays some time.

My trap average (so far this season) is 22.17, although every time we've shot this season have been rainy, windy, or otherwise crappy, so I'm hoping to have a 23 average by the end of the season. (My other goal is to shoot a 50...we'll see!)

Anyway, that's the very first thing you should do with your new scatterstick. Shooting any kind of clays is pretty much the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Pennsylvania considers a firearm to be a "pistol." In other words, unless you have less than a 16" long shotgun, its a shotgun. Rifles fall into a different classification also. And what you have is a wonderful shotgun!

I can't help you with great places to shoot near Camp Hill, but if you frequent the Altoona area regularly, let me know. There is a great club/range there with everything from metal knock down targets for pistols to various skeet setups and they even have those "western cowboy" shooting simulations.

I grew up in Carlisle right next to state game lands. Most of them have shooting ranges. Contact your local fish and game commission. Join up and they usually have block shoots, skeet and trap shoots, and other shooting events.

That 870 will serve you well. What choke is the barrel? If you want to hunt with it, consider the choke. The faster the game, the wider the choke you want. You can do that with different barrels, or buy a barrel with a RemChoke. The end of the barrel is threaded and accepts different choke inserts for different game.

My dad and I collect a lot of guns. I think between the two of us we have 6 or 7 870s and a few 1100s (the semi automatic version). I have eaten a lot of rabbits, pheasants, turkeys, and squirrels that I shot with my favorite which is actually a 20-gauge chambered for 3" mag.

honestly you could weld the barrel shut and fill it with concrete and it's still the ultimate home defense weapon. all you need is that sound.

I just took my Concealed Pistol License class (you old guys might know it as a CCW)...anyway, I am getting a revolver for personal protection soon...
