So, I was out on my bike this morning and I pass this P71 with like 26" wheels on it.  And suddenly, as the vehicle passes I'm struck with "The Explanation!"  The inspiration for this bizarre, illogical fad.  The connection is undeniable.

After years of amused befuddlement at the motives of the owners of such vehicles, now I understand that they hope to emulate the appearance of an agricultural sprayer.  It all makes sense.  Imprisoned by the confines of urban living and the associated decay, both moral and physical, they seek a return to simpler, cleaner living.

It is my fervent wish that this helps someone, somewhere.  Have a wonderful day!

Donks are the urban automotive variation of these, and are created for exactly the same purpose:

Wait. Isn't this trend about 10 years old?

Oh, gosh.  At least 10, I'd say.  Probably a good bit older than that.  What's your point?

Early 2000s, to approaching 20. First started when Latrell Sprewell released the infamous spinner- in a 20". Then 20 became standard. And then came the high risers, the early ladder framed donks, and the themed crowd. Now it seems to have receded into the biggest berkeleying wheels you can get, but tucking them into the car. Fender cuts and ridiculous radiuses being chased in the name of 32" wheels are the norm. Donks are weird.

This is not the explanation of the Carolina Squat that we really need.

We've gotten to the point that when I see a triple white Caprice convertible on 26"s and a mild lift, I consider it tasteful.

Honestly, donks aren't that much different than the old "throw a Camaro/Mustang/AMC Pacer body on a truck frame" creations that have been going on forever. It's just that but with shinier wheels.

Which is to say, it's fine by me.

A Carolina squatter lives down the street from me.  An obnoxous E36 M3head punk. He lives with his parents & has appeared to be un-employed for the 4 years they've lived there. His obnoxous berkeleyhead friends come by a lot to visit him with their Carolina Squatters.  All the trucks are loud. All the E36 M3heads vape a lot.  A recent trend I've noticed is hauling 2 huge tires around in the back of the squattrucks.  I can appreciate nearly all manner of mods, donks, lowriders, even moderately stanced vehicles, but not the Carolina Squats.

While I’m sure they still exist, Donks ceased to be a “fad” long ago, as did the word “fad.”

Also Donks > brodozers, IMHO.

In reply to poopshovel again :

Fad is accurately defined in the "Urban Dictionary" which is where all the hip kids go to learn the new lingo.  Dinosaurs roamed the Earth "long ago"--donks, not so much, since the term apparently first appeared in Miami in the late '80's, early 90's to describe 70's Caprices and Impalas, which was pretty much like yesterday.

Oh, and get off my lawn.

At least donks sometimes have the good sense to do quality body work- and some of the paint is amazing. I have however yet to find a single berkeleying Impala that's had it's doors hung straight.

Yes.  In my experience the % of Donk drivers that go out of their way to be obnoxious shiny happy people seems to be quite a bit lower than Brodozer drivers.

Florida had enough bad reputation happening with the whole Florida Man thing, so they tried to foist that stupid negative rake off on us. The Carolina Squat is really the Palatka Lean.
