Don't use any clamps, use a welder. Go to a motorcycle shop or a go-kart shop. or http://www.mcmaster.com/#steel/=c23afz and bend it like conduit. Conduit would probably work just fine. What old pipes? Just weld up a new exhaust system and bolt it to the engine.

Small engine shop, Comet kart sales, tractor pulling crowd should have some hardware. Think extreme lawnmower sports? these guys do what we do only they do it with yard appliances.

I'm not ready to give up on it. I think TRoglodyte was implying that maybe I can find a good muffler in a salvage yard. I will look into that, although I'd still be faced with removing the flanges from the engine, which will be a lot of work.

Got my mower for 20 bucks and she runs great.

I offered my old Briggs muffler which COULD PROBABLY be welded/modded to fit. Wouldn't be hard to ship, because if it fits, it ships!.. Or something like that. PM me for details if you're interested.

You don't get a 52" commercial mower for $20, although I wish I could! Your muffler would choke my engine, but thanks for the offer.

Be sure to keep an eye on ebay - people part out mowers (and 16hp engines) all the time. You may have to search for your engine or mower PN's.

i had a similar delima w/ my old JD w/ Kohler 16 hp. I got a slightly smaller (and cheaper) muffler off of ebay and adapted it using the smallest exhaust tubing adaptors Advance Auto carries. I still had to take a slice out of the adaptor so that it would crimp down enough to seal up but it worked.

Coffee can and jumbo hose clamps. I prefer ear muffs to ear plugs

I thought of that. But at my local Advance the smallest exhaust pipe they had was 1-1/2", and no adapters. I'm thinking that's really not close enough. But I think I'll do something similar. I found some 1-1/4" pipe with a .065 wall. This should fit over my 1-1/8" pipe very tightly. I'll then put a clamp on each one, weld a pipe thread on the other end and use two universal mufflers. If I still worked for SuperTrapp none of this would be a problem.

You might want to check out your local NAPA store. I got a muffler for my Onan generator for about 1/3 what a factory part would cost. It was for some tractor I think. Their counter catalogues show sizes and dimensions.
