This isn't anything new, but for me, has reached a new level of insanity.
I just received my copy of C&D in the mail a couple days ago. I was flipping through and in the back they had a small article on the test drive of the 2014 Chevy Silverado with the new 4.3L Ecotec3 V6. To much of my amazement was that this was a Z71 4x4 Quad Cab Shortbed. That's a lot of truck for a V6 IMO. When I went over to the specs section at the end of the article, it said base price was a little over $42k. Then it said price as tested was over $47k! Geez, $47k? For a V6 truck? Damn. I imagine the "popularity" of trucks has caused pricing to be like this, also it doesn't help that it's probably an all options Press model.
I imagine the Ford's and Ram's are all priced out the same, but it's still insane.
I think that the availability of seven year loans is what pushed up truck prices, rather than the other way around.
In 2004 when I sold Fords, the highest priced truck on our lot was a Harley Davidson F250 diesel crew cab SRW 4x4 at a whooping $49K. I was just talking about how ridiculous truck pricing is these days. Everything is a little higher in price but trucks are getting ridiculous.
If you think of these trucks as CAFE mandated replacements for full sized cars, the pricing makes more sense. What did the last 4.3 Caprice cost, inflation adjusted? EDIT: Around $35k, but car inflation has been higher the last few decades, so mid 40s for one with 4wd doesn't sound too far off.
So it was a 4x4 (expensive), quad cab (expensive), and a Z71 (expensive). Not shocked at all. What does a rubber-mat standard cab contractor's special run?

Just for laughs I went to Chevy's website to see how expensive I could configure a pickup. I started with a Silverado 1500 crew cab standard box and got the price up to $60,400. Granted, that's with a lot of retarded options ($2,995 22" wheels, for example), but daaaaaaaaaaamn.
Hate to see what would happen if I chose a Suburban or diesel 3500.
From the Chevy website a base 2014 Silverado with no options is $26k.
The sticker on our 2013 F150 XL supercab 5.0 with axle ratio and trailer package as only option was at $32K
suburban I got up to just under 75k...

..
Lots of unsold fleet model Chevy 2500 HD WTs with a 6.0 and 2wd for about @21k down around Atlanta
I want a carpet delete truck no matter what I get. After having one rubber mat truck, I don't ever want carpet again.

But it was a V6. If it were the 6.0L V8 I wouldn't be so surprised. The fact that they will let you option out a V6 truck like that is surprising.
My buddy just bought a 2014 loaded quad cab, 4x4 Ram for $25k
Just wait 5-7 years and buy one for pennies on the dollar......
That new Ecotec3 V6 ain't your grandpa's 4.3L though. Last week a friend and I were talking about the "V6 stigma" that GM will have to overcome with their new trucks. This thread is a perfect example. The new 4.3L is putting up numbers near what the "old" 5.3L was just last year. On top of that it's doing it with better fuel economy, and in a lighter truck. We were comparing extended cab 4x4 Sierras, 5.3L '13 vs 4.3L '14. You won't likely catch me buying a new truck anytime soon, but I WILL strongly consider that new V6.

I seriously need to give a new Ram a chance when that diesel comes out in the 1500. Their pricing looks awesome.

Agreed. People are too quick to bash a V6, especially cartards. A guy at my work is a perfect example of a cartard, only cares about how a car sounds so of course hates V6s. It's the main reason he hates Porsche.
A little off topic, it's the same concern I have about the 4 cylinder Mustang that is coming. It will be awesome, but people will think of the Mustang II flop.

I imagine he hates the I6 BMWs too? I personally think some 6 cylinder engines are among the best sounding in the world... and an uncorked Porsche Flat 6 is on that list

A 6 cylinder Jag with proper exhaust is pure music
Who pays full-price for trucks? I always see them listed for $8k off.

They're desperate to sell/lease them here in Indiana.....4dr/4wd for sub $200/mo lease......I saw that and was tempted for all of 1/1000th of a second before I started laughing. Oddly enough I was more interested in the saab 9-7x the same dealer had used for $6k.....
Also, I agree with "If you pay sticker you're a blithering idiot"

this.
my avalanche cost the first guy a tad under $47K according to the sticker, not counting all the crap the dealer and state add to that.
he takes the hit, i drive it away for 13,500 out the door. and it literally looks brand new with the exception of one scratch on a door and lightly faded bed panels. i'm glad he's the one who paid 35 grand to drive a truck for 7 years and not me.
way back in 1997 i bought a brand new 2wd v6 w/t 1500 with auto and a/c as the only options for $17xxx

I bought my 2012 F-150 with the 3.7 V-6 and 19k miles for $23k OTD in Charlotte. It was basically one peg above the work truck but was 4-door, 2wd with power everything. Didn't have NAV or any other nonsense. V-6 wasn't huge on power, but I still thought it had all it needed to tow when needed. I wouldn't use one as a dedicated tow rig though. It had to go in favor of AWD here in Pittsburgh.
