As I thought about what batteries I had in my 5 remote controls and the flame that was shown from the University last week; I started to wonder how irrelevant or off topic I can be. So I will start........

  1. I can specify out how many pipe guides you will need for any given length of pipe.

Please comment on the following issues:

  • Is the distance between guides independent of pipe size?

  • Does the type of pipe (high pressure, hot, cold etc) affect the distance of guides?

  • Is there any issue / compensation for expansion and contraction with temperature?

He's a professional, I'm sure he knows about shrinkage

From B31.1, table 121.5: Suggested Pipe Support Spacing:

There are general notes at the bottom of this chart that should be taken into consideration, also.

There are a lot of things to consider when looking at temperature differentials and operating pressure.

aircooled wrote: Please comment on the following issues: - Is the distance between guides independent of pipe size? Pipe guide spacing is dependent on pipe size BUT the first 2 guides are spaced the same from the EJ (and anchor point) ----> (1st = 4XD) then (2nd = 14XD). D = pipe diameter . - Does the type of pipe (high pressure, hot, cold etc) affect the distance of guides? yes, the higher the working pressure, the closer the pipe guides are AFTER the first 2 pipe guides. Temperature was already considered in the thermal growth calculation. - Is there any issue / compensation for expansion and contraction with temperature? Yes. I have to calculate max temp (expansion) and low temp (contraction).

great questions - see above. I follow all EJMA guidelines.

Does pipe length matter or only how you are using it?

Seriously.

I was hoping you guys could toss back to me a lot more irrelevant crap than the totally irrelevant crap I deal with all day long.

Sorry broseph. Here's some garbage for you, I woke up at noon, put on pants at 2 and haven't eaten yet.

Oh, I should put on pants. This is the first day in almost a year where I've had nothing to do. I put a turkey in the smoker when the wife left for work and worked on a model truck. It's light now so I should probably have pants on to retrieve mah turkey.

There is a filter with a manufactured date of 1969 in an air handling unit. It's still there. Even now...

What if the pipe is buried? Do I still need pipe guides? What about "thrust blocks?"

Hmmm. I went out drinking with a friend from high school Friday and I'm friends with a stripper now.

If I'm lucky I can get in her pants.

then the pipe guides need to be in vaults or man holes. thrust blox are out of my realm.

I don't think length or use should matter as long as you're laying the pipe well.

Same kind of precautions you take road racing a bone stock car from the 70s. Hold on, go balls deep and hope you don't die.
