Logan (for the uninformed, SWMBO's 8yr old son) has discovered a new show on Netflix.

First time he's really showed an interest in cars at all. Here's hoping something sticks!

That's great! He will definitely like cars more. I wouldn't say it's the best show, but it's a start for sure.
I read the books and then watched all the stages when I was young, I actually had the original ones before the reworked english subtitles. Hell, I still do watch Initial D every now and then probably the best show you could show a young car enthusiast
Actually, other than my dad and going to shows/races, it's what taught me about different driving styles, drive layouts and that manuals are what's natural

Well, I would have preferred a regular race or something..but at the moment I'll take what I can get!
His mom & I are both anime fans, I'm not surprised he stumbled across it.

The books are way more accurate. When I first watched the Anime, they had to leave a lot out of it, which I get, but there are many inaccuracies.
I wanted to hate it, since it was about street racing..but I had to admit that it did a better job of examining our culture than anything since "Le Mans" or "Grand Prix". The water in the cup (friction circle), chassis codes, other technical details ("..and get rid of these 70 series tires!"), etc.
There's also that "soap opera" aspect ("I'm pretty sure it says 'Tureno' on the back..")..I had a 'sports dad', and I was intrigued by a story where there was one that was shoving racing (instead of stickandball stuff like mine did) down his kid's throat.
And yeah, I'm hopeful..but if the boy doesn't ask more about car stuff afterwards, I'm not going full-tilt sports dad about it.

It's obvious that in the first couple series they had licensing issues, because they could verbalize but could not show anything on the screen. I think it was resolved when the series got more popular.
