It's time to find a new job. It's been getting worse and the straw that broke the camel's back was yesterday's "raise" and the expectation of taking on more responsibilities. So, I have to wait until the end of may (unless something spectacular comes up) because of vacations and such.

So, what does a guy who's spent 13 years in dealership parts/service, 5 years on oil/coolant/fuel analysis, has STLE OMA and CLS certifications, loaded aircraft, ran forklifts/cranes/locomotives(last one not certified by anyone, just a perk), cleaned floors, worked in parts stores and even walmart do now? I love my job, if I could actually do it. All my competitors are out of town and I'd prefer not to move to Hotlanta or Milwaukee.

I guess this is more just a vent thread but any ideas that y'all might have would be appreciated. I have time. I don't have to move out right now. But I need out. For my sanity and the wifes.

It's an excellent book.  Although it is at least 30 years old it is the kind of information that doesn't fundamentally go invalid.

Kind of like the Secrets Of Solo Racing for finding a job or career.

Yes. It is nothing earthshaking. But it provides a framework to guide you through some thinking on what you want and what you are good at.

I ran through that book and it was at least good for getting me thinking about what I wanted in my next role... a few roles ago.  Anyway, if you do go into it seriously, I'd buy the workbook as there's a lot of on-paper activities as part of going through the book.  I wrote it all out on a notepad and it was pretty tedious.  I think your situation sounds like it would be a perfect application of the book & mental tasks required to get something else going.

Go work at Subaru? https://careers.subaru-sia.com/job/Lafayette-Chemical-Engineer-Automotive-Paint-IN-47905/618838100/

Looks like Allison Transmission is down in Indianapolis with some openings: https://allisontransmission.com/careers/job-search

Think you can sell yourself outside of the automotive industry? Your experience in chemicals may transfer to other industries.

Rolls Royce has a new facility on the outskirts of Purdue, maybe they'd have something there?

I'm outside the automotive industry now. My automotive history helped me get here, but I spend more time on large equipment and plant machinery than anything automotive. That area of the market is a very small percentage of our business.

I know it would be a haul for you, but if you like the idea of what you do know, but want less other stuff getting in the way, Cummins does a bunch of in house fluid analysis for their customers in Columbus.

In general, what do you want in a job (salary, schedule, flexibility, number of years, security, location, etc)?

I have about 13 years to retirement if I make similar income to today. I am not looking for a career at this point. I wanted that for so long only to realize that companies don't give a E36 M3. I want someplace that appreciates the knowledge and drive I have and my work ethic.

id prefer non-physical jobs at this point. I'm not 25 anymore and realize that. I've always had customer facing jobs and wouldn't mind not. But anything is on the table for me. Columbus is about an hour south of me so I'd need something small and economical. I'm a Monday through Friday guy. Wife prefers first shift. I'm ambivalent on the matter.

what I truly desire is something like I have now that keeps me mentally stimulated. I never do the exact same thing twice.

It's a moot point. They outsource that. Want to guess where?

My piece of advice is to make sure your resume and references are up to date and just start looking. I've had good luck with ZipRecruiter.

This plus a nice profile on LinkedIn and maybe Glassdoor and a few others.

Funny timing on this thread. When I first posted in it, about 16-17 hours earlier, I was starting to prepare my resume. Unhappy with my current job, mostly because of my new manager. Well, since then I’ve discovered that a peer of mine will probably get a promotion and I’ll report to said peer instead. And that makes me a lot happier, assuming no other changes.

In any case, I’ll still keep the job search open just because. But it will mostly be internal positions that I’ll be looking at, for now.

My advice? Make sure your feet are tucked in when you punch out or the canopy bow will take your legs off at the knees.

You are 13 years from retirement, does that mean you're about 52 to retire at 65?

If so let me explain one of the realities of the job market. Age discrimination.
Briefly we are now on the 11th year of a stronger economy, with so many indicators indicating an economic down turn.
The global market already is at that point and Boeing's 737 issues, the massive numbers of refugees world wide, the Virus out of China, and Here in America  manufacturing has already slowed down dramatically, traffic volume on the rivers and via trains  is down by over 20% ( indicating less demand for commodities)  and a general softening of demand.  In fact consumers are the only strong sector of the economy.

At this moment  employment opportunities abound, but remember that old saw, Last hired first fired.

I had a sterling reputation in sales with documents and written testimony  to back it up but at age 59 in the recession of 2008 I couldn't get an interview.  I wore out show leather, sharpened my computer skills, knocked on doors,  applied to every opening and even when I got an interview 3-4 years later They took one look at me in person and I could see my age turned them off.

It's not fair  or even legal but it's life.  My point is, depending on how youthful you appear you really only have a few years left before you have to be solidly in your retirement job ( unless you want to drive school buses)

44 plans to retire at 56. with that said, I don't see either of us completely stopping work. I am certain I will do something at least part time and she wants to be an IA instead of teacher so there will still be income but at the point of "if we don't like it we don't go".

No, you're 52 and people are discriminating against you. Why don't you get it?

Steve... Uncalled for here. Frenchy brings up a good point, and he was working under the assumption of "normal" retirement age of 65.
