Got this drill press out of my GF's father's garage. He was a heavy equipment mechanic and had some serious stuff in there - I also got a floor jack that looks like it could lift a tank, but I haven't touched that yet. In any case, here's the press:

It hasn't been used in decades. The idea is to free everything up and get it functioning, then have it sandblasted and repaint. I got the clamp and the three pivots on the arm free without too much difficulty, but the collars that carry the drill are firmly lodged on the shaft, so there's no up and down movement. The screw to adjust the collar that controls overall height is also stuck. Soaking in penetrating oil now. A limited application of heat (a minute or two of MAPP gas) and force (whacking it moderately with a 4# lump hammer through a 2x4) did nothing. Don't want to crack anything, though I imagine it's fairly robust. Suggestions on how to proceed?

Once it is freed up I'm planning to mount a big Craftsman I've got but rarely use. The retaining collar on the stand is 2" in diameter, while the drill is about 1 9/16". These probably came with some sort of adapter, but if it ever existed it's long gone. Ideas on how to securely adapt the drill to the stand?

Also, I can't find any info on how old this thing is. Does anyone know of a database for old B&D tool serial numbers, or even model date ranges?

My go to when I have stuck threads is MAPP gas till the color changes slightly, then application of some form of wax to lubricate the threads.  I would imagine it would work here.  You could also try soaking it in Evapo Rust for a day or two and see if it frees up.  If you use the Evapo Rust make sure you degrease everything.

Dunno if it'll help, but on page 12 of this 1953 B&D catalog (here) you can find a Type C Drill Stand in Size 20 and Size 40.  I have a sinking feeling this will actually leave you knowing less than you do now, but FWIW....

This one should be a Size 40, since it's marked for a 1/2" drill. The design in the catalog looks a bit different to the one I have, however - the clamp for the drill is different, and the handle on mine looks more like the Size 60 shown. I have a feeling they made these for a long time (there's very similar presses in a catalog I found from the 1920s), so I probably need to track down some sort of resource to decode the serial number.

Did some more cleaning and got a couple of old bench grinders and an absolutely massive bench vice. I'll post some details and pics as I get to cleaning them up.
