Here's something I've wondered about: during the swimming and diving events I've noticed the competitors are usually wearing parkas, right up to the point where they get in the water. Is the ambient temperature that cold in the swimming venues, or is it just something they do to keep their muscles warmed up and ready to go? It seems like a regular tracksuit would be adequate. I understand that they keep the water temperature at around 80 degrees F so it's not like they're jumping into an icy pond.
I'd doubt that it's that warm. When I was swimming, anything over 72 degrees F was too warm. Cold pools are faster pools.
They said you was hung...
I hear the triathlon athletes really liked the fecal infested Seine for the swim portion of their competition.

NBC cuts away from the conclusion of an exciting cycle race to gymnastics, because Simone Biles.
Good thing they didn't for the women's race- that was an amazing finish. From a min down to winning by almost a min. Awesome.

I mean, we all swim in E36 M3 water. It's just the E36 M3/water ratio we're willing to tolerate that's the difference.

Noah Lyles takes men's 100m gold by the barest of margins. That was an incredible race.

That women's road race was epic.

Very impressive move...was her acceleration so strong that no one could catch a wheel before she was gone? It was a strong move...but catching that wheel would have been a ticket to silver/gold instead of the 3 way sprint they contested for silver /bronze at the end.

Holy crap. Polish Climber broke the world record by like 0.05 seconds her first qualifying run. Next qualifying run she beat that by about 0.15 seconds.

I searched for results on what temperature the Olympic pool is kept at and that was the response, although I can't vouch for its accuracy.
Did the NBC sponsorship just change the results of the women's floor exercises??
New world record in the pole vault, 6.25m (20.5ft) for Sweden.

What happened?
US coaches asked for a review of Jordan Chile's score in the floor exercises. The judges added a tenth to her score for the difficulty of one of her moves that they apparently missed. It ended up putting her past a Romanian gymnast, and taking her place for the bronze medal.

To add to that, the results had already been reviewed and posted- so the Romanian gymnast was up on one of the mats celebrating with her flag. Then another review happened, and the results changed.
I now understand what happened- but is sure makes them look bad. At least in the super close 100M race, they didn't put anything up until they looked at the photo finish.
Yeah, it must have been devastating for the Romanian gymnast. I don't know how quickly the US team asked for a review, but it seems like it should have been done before the results were first announced.
In reply to stuart in mn :
How could you do that? You don't know the score until it's announced, so you don't know you might want a review. And anyone who can do basic math does the result math as soon as each individual score is announced.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
They should have seen it in the first review appeal. The fact that they posted the number, and then before the final results in order did the VAR the review, then posted the final standings, and finally did a review where they saw the change. It was kind of a mess.

My thought was as soon as they got Chiles' score they could have asked for a review, and that would have been before the rest of the competition was complete. At that point there would be a hold on making the final awards until the review was processed. Obviously I'm not an expert on how it's done, and I wasn't watching it live so I don't know if the Romanian competed before or after her.
In reply to stuart in mn :
We happened to see it live- Chiles was last. If that helps. There was more to the reviews than the evening broadcast showed.
Though it's not really my thing, gymnastics is an amazing sport. It also seems to have the most controversy and strife going at all times due to the fact that it's a judged sport with lots of nuance.

At least they allow reviews. Women's skeet was decided by judges calling a hit a miss with no video review allowed.
