How exactly does one become so holier than thou?
He pulled off the exact same stunt on a smaller scale, using a go cart ramp a third of the size of the one in the gif we saw a moment ago...landed safe and sound about a dozen times
If you knew anything about the guy, he was about as accomplished as one gets in the BMX world. If you saw any of the footage taken just prior to his crash, he hit the ramp about 20 or 30 times with it stationary in an attempt to get the speed just right. Yes, he made a mistake in his approach, adding just an extra half crank of speed. He lived for about 3 years afterwards, and ended up taking his own life. Not because he was depressed about his injuries, but because he knew hed never be able to support himself, and couldnt bear the thought of being a burden on his friends and family.
Should he have had a backup plan? Maybe, but he did his due diligence (or whatever you want to call it in a risky sport) in an attempt to make it as safe as possible, practicing for over a year.
Having been seriously injured while skateboarding several times, I don't find any injury videos/gifs to be "hilarious" as per the thread title, but to each his own.
I just cringe when I see them=/
lets get back to hilarious cat gifs!
4cylinder.
What I was saying was that if you make your living off an extreme sport, you should expect to get hurt. If I was making millions driving F1 cars, and I lost my legs tomorrow, that would really really suck, but I'd come to terms with that idea, just like the risk of dying, as part of the "life".
I was not questioning the rider's ability at all.
If I had a friend who was a pro-BMX rider, I'd probably ask him "what would you do tomorrow if you could never ride/walk/berkley again?" I guess I'm a buzz-kill like that, but its valuable for folks to address these mental "risks" as much as the physical ones. I don't like seeing people kill themselves.
My guess is he got lucky and the chunk fell towards the wall, he probably still slid down the chunk, but landed in snow.
Otherwise, poor guy.
It's at the end of this video

but cuts at the same place as the .gif
I can't find anymore footage, but did find this statement
"That's Urs Odermatt, in Switzerland, 7. March 2005. He not only survived the 25m fall, but the ONLY injury was a bruising in his left thigh."

Probably from one of his solid brass balls banging into it too hard.
