Outdoor speaker things v.bluetooth

Picked out the speakers already.

Looking for a cheap way to power them, but my biggest "want" is to be able to throw pandora from my phone via bluetooth, just as i do in my Jeep.

What do i buy?

There are lots of great reviews of it. Basically everyone says to throw the included power supply away and use something more powerful. That with a bluetooth adapter will have you in business. I have this setup in the garage running some bookshelf speakers and it works well.

Alternatively and if you feel like geeking out you could put together a raspberry pi to use as a music server. I can provide links if needed, but there are LOTS of options in this realm. The basic principle is that its a linux PC on your network and you can control it from your phone or a web browser.

For my outdoor music, I just have an old reciever hooked to a multizone selector for the different parts of the patio/yard. I have a tablet hooked to it with google play music.

You can just run any stereo unit to it with an aux in. Get a NFC device so you can just swipe the phone over it and it will play. Very simple. Great if multiple family members want to use it. A buddy has one in his garage. I was impressed.

I do like asoduk's suggestion as well.

My dad actually uses the Lepai in his office. Its been running 24/7 for almost a year without a hiccup. He replaced a Nutone wall mount with it and his secretary feeds it with music from her PC.

I think my question specifically in this case is "How does the bluetooth adapter work?" Does it actually "pair" with my phone and i can throw pandora from my phone to the adapter? Or will this only work for playing files "on" the phone?

Because otherwise, this sounds like the way to go. Cheap basic amp, $40 or less for a bluetooth adapter, set amp at reasonable volume, fine volume control from phone.

The bluetooth adapter will play anything that is on your phone. Pandora, youtube, your files, etc... I have a ghetto in ceiling system exactly like you want that uses the same thing. Get the little amp above, one of these, and you are good to go.

Is the Lepai listed above the way to go? I'm prepared to spend $80-$100 for a small chip-amp type deal, would prefer as powerful as possible, mostly because i'm a guy that prefers his amps to be more powerful than necessary.

It is similar to the Lepai but supposedly better, hence why I bought it. However, I never heard of upping the power supply on the Lepai. Wouldn't surprise me a ton that they use the same internals but mine uses a better power supply to start with. My little amp can throw out some juice. It won't keep up with my stereo in the house but I am considering getting another for my car.

Yep that one came up in my searches, but doesn't seem to come with the power supply.

I saw that there are some on there rated for 40-50wpc, which i'm sure is at like eleventy % distortion, but i'm struggling to figure out how to identify which ones are actually using different chips than the others.

Yeah, the 50w ones with the TDA7492 board are what i was finding. If you search "TDA7492" on ebay a bunch of them come up. I'm kindof thinking it might be worth trying.

I bought mine without a power supply and snagged a 12v 5a supply off amazon for something like 9 bucks. Totally worth it for the money.

Found that one in the US with a power supply included for about $73. That plus the $15 bluetooth adapter sounds like fun for under $100.

With the Lepai, a laptop adapter is the way to go. 12V, 5A. I found that the stock PS had a hard time pushing my 6" speakers. Get the 5A and you can crank it up to 11.

FWIW, I wasn't able to power my own multizone setup with it even after the uprated PS.

If size isn't an issue, that $73 would probably be better spent on a vintage stereo.

Size is somewhat of an issue. Going to sit this on a small shelf in the corner near the ceiling, then run the speaker wires through the window i think.

If you have a receiver or system you want to use it may have an auxiliary input.
You can hook up an "NFC" (near field communication) device. It is about 4 inch by 4 inch and you can swipe your phone over it to make an instant bluetooth connecton. Instaly, your music would be playing over the connected stereo. I know guys with one in each room so they can just swipe on the way in and music plays.

Hopefully that clears up some confusion.

Oh, so basically it's just a faster way to make bluetooth connection?

Gotcha. Receiver won't be easily accessible, i'd prefer to just tuck everything out of the way. Normal pairing speed is fine, if i'm jamming to tunes out on the deck, chances are i have a beer in my hand and i'm not worried about getting E36 M3 done fast.

Looks like it should work well! What are you doing for speaker wires? The Amazon Basics wires are pretty decent. I think I used those for a couple runs. I also used some of the monoprice wire where the two wires are housed in a sheathing.

Whatever i have laying around. I have a hundred feet or so left over from old projects.

My neighbors will hate me. These speakers have plenty of bass, and even image halfway decently.

The catch: forgot that i needed flat wire to run through the window. Amazon delivering some tomorrow.

I have this one mounted in the attic above my garage. I like it in that it goes dormant when not paired and I can operate it all from my phone. I run ceiling mount speakers and it all works remarkably well.
