My craftsman that we installed in 2004 is still working flawlessly. The Chamberlain we installed on the small door in 2006 is also flawless. Both were under $300 combined with extra remotes. What makes these liftmasters so great that they are always breaking?

They are great when they're working properly. First, they are a lot quieter than the conventional ones, and second, you don't lose a bunch of headroom in the centre of the garage.

I looked into getting a new one but it was ~$800 installed vs ~$300 to fix the board, so I opted to have the board fixed

These are wall mounted jackshaft door openers, so they don't sit over the bay/cars. That gives way more headroom if you have a lift in your garage, like I do. My two "standard" Liftmaster openers on my other doors are working just fine...
They also can be installed by your below average hillrod in about 30 minutes and don't really need any particular alignment or setup. They have no external moving parts, no additional tracks, belts, chains, or screws. No additional points of lubrication or inspection. They allow for more flexible door opening options to increase headroom and are not sitting in the middle of your bays all the time.
If your Liftmaster homeowner grade unit is failing a commercial opener is also an option. They are built for open/close cycles every 5 minutes, 24 hrs a day.

They are super easy to install, especially if you are replacing one of the same.

Ugh, these are $430 shipped on Amazon. Looks like I could've bought a new one and installed it myself for $100 more than just the board. Oh well, live and learn

They're actually all the same. Chamberlain is the company; the Chamberlain branded openers are supposed to be for DIY installs; the Liftmaster is the line for professional installers, Craftsman are rebranded Chamberlain.
