low end Lenovo laptops are garbage. I have one for work and I spend more time coercing it into working than actually working.
That's been my experience as well. I usually avoid touching any model that doesn't start with 'T' or 'X' - typing this drivel on an X240 that's dual-boot Win10 Pro and Manjaro Linux. I did drop an SSD into that but otherwise it's completely stock and just works.
Re the "shoulda used a VM" comments - that really depends on how sensitive the applications Keith needs to run are to timing and especially I/O timing. Not everything that talks to hardware is insensitive enough to the timing variance to work well in a VM.

Downside with MacBooks and other Apple computer hardware is that Apple is really good at discontinuing support for them, both from an OS and a hardware standpoint.
That older Macbook can still happily run the latest OSX - which is a no-charge upgrade. I specifically chose a mid-2012 because it's more upgradable than later ones. It's a perky little thing, it blows the doors off this cheap Lenovo but I didn't really expect much different especially with the SSD on the Mac.
My personal laptop (another MBP) is not a work laptop, I have no interest in bootcamping my own machine for this. Nor am I going to steal my wife's

Pretty sensitive to timing - but more importantly, I don't want to bother. I'm looking for a hammer, not a custom-milled precision screwdriver here. This thing was supposed to be "take out of box, install logging software, log". I have a real work machine that's set up to do what I need it to do, but it can't go for car rides
