Get a road trip book from your local book store and grab a magic eightball. As you cruise through sections of the country and read about certain attractions, ask the 8 ball whether you should stop at them or not. Makes a great random road trip. My wife and I have done that a few times, and it we've had a lot of fun doing it.
Time of year is a big factor. I've done the cross country roundtrip 7 times. Arizona in august is misery, even with A/C--and hiking around the Grand Canyon, or Arches National Park in Utah is equally testing during August. Try doing this trip in spring of fall. Crowds are smaller. kids are back in school, it's "off-season at some spots so room rates are reduced. Do the round trip: Northern route one way southren route the other. With side trips here and there. You will be amazed at just how big the country is; highly reccommended for everyone to do this trip once. DO REALLY try to get cruise control in whatever you drive. Twice I had the benefit of it; what a difference in how you feel after 10+ hours of driving! Since were talking southwest, stop into Jerome, AZ,; it's about an hour west of Sedona, at the top of a small mountain. Great little town with a collection of engines and cars in a "junkyard" that spans from a Stutz bearcat to the main engine found in a WWII submarine, with a working saw mill in the middle of it. And the owner will fire up a HUGE propane powered engine for $10 that will make the ground shake. Been there twice. Lots of fun.
