I had my car in for service, and while waiting, I see a Boxter on the "DEALS DEALS DEALS!" used car lot for $9,000. I stroll over, and lo and behold, it looks pretty good. Base model, 5 speed, under 60,000 miles. Interior and exterior are in great shape. I quickly walked away before I did anything stupid (I'd get financing in a heartbeat) but I can't stop thinking about it. Stories of recent purchases on this board are not helping either. Why so cheap? What catastrophic failure awaits at the 60,000 mile mark?
What year is it? 2.7s are better and the glass rear window is a nice bonus.
I personally prefer the 2.5, but I'm an oddball that doesn't want more than 200 horsepower in my sportscar...
9,000 is about the going rate for a 60,000 mile car, but you'll want to have the intermediate shaft bearing upgraded ASAP, and check for a recent water pump install in the records.
DO IT!
I'm hearing the siren song, as well. I'm watching all of the Boxster/Cayman threads very closely.
What year was it exactly?
They do sound fantastic.....really, really fantastic. They still scare me....but man, that SOUND!
It's a 1999 model with the 2.5. It may be underpowered and slow compared to a 911 or later Boxster S, but compared to a MK1 MR2 or a Kia Rondo, it will be tons of fun. And I looked it up, it has just over 83,000 miles. That makes a little difference.

I did too! I even bought a 3.2S and still preferred my original 2.5 for driving.

The 3.2 is a great motor, but I think the 6-speed kills a lot of the fun of driving that car. The taller geared 5 speed is a great trans, and absolutely bulletproof.
Interestingly, my 95 Audi has the same 012 transmission, and in that car, it could really use a 6th gear...
I started the other Boxster thread, but they sold it before I got back into town. Now I've drank the Kool Aid though, so I've been actively searching for another. If you really don't want one, do not drive it!

So does the Passat... after I wore the syncros out, I thought about buying a Passat transmission (much cheaper because it doesn't say 'Porsche' on it) to replace.
Turned out to not matter, I had a guy buy the car with worn syncros and no real negotiation on price.
