Any ad without a phone number is suspect. And when you do a Google on the e-mail address and find the same ad all over the country, well, you get it.

I hadn't thought of Googling the e-mail, but will do so in the futre.

I have dealt with a couple of people on CL via email, with real things to sell, because they did not want to deal with phone calls at all times of the day and night. So, I didn't think too much of no phone # listed; I will from now on.

Lately I've come across a lot of people selling parts, particularly WRX takeoff parts, who post neither a picture nor an asking price. They proceed to ask you to email or text them an offer without having seen the part. They describe its condition as "Nearly brand new- was removed from car with only 89,000 miles."

If you're parting out a car, or have shelves full of parts, I can see telling people you have too much to list and getting them to show up to look. However, when you've got ONE part for sale, look before you post your ad. If there are 4 other people trying to sell the same thing, you're going to need to match, if not beat, the price and level of information provided in their ads if you expect responses.

Particularly if you're trying to sell a 5 year old axle back exhaust that may either be usable, or rusted out crap.

Great idea

I recently bought something off Kijiji (our version of CL). It was the most difficult purchase I've ever made, and because the seller was acting so odd, I googled his name, email address, and phone numbers. Nothing came up, and I ended up buying it, but it was sure had me wondering for about a week.

To stay on topic, here's a beauty for you

Holiday season brings more high dollar ads

And we all know that non-running cars fetch a premium as they could be parted out for more than the CL price . . .

1996 VW Passat Wagon TDI Greasecar - $6000

Sweet Greasecar Passat wagon. Engine has only 132,000 miles, body has 232,000 miles (new engine installed at 100k). Complete records convey. Manual transmission/5-speed, 4-cylinder turbo diesel, moon/sun roof, cruise control, power steering, power windows, dual airbags, AC... Runs great on diesel or SVO (straight vegetable oil), nice Greasecar dual tank system (see extra tank in pic). Gets about 45 miles/gallon on either. Just drove to NYC and back on SVO. Engine is solid and powerful, body shows normal wear. Lots of room for 5 people plus luggage/dog or put the seats down and use like a little truck. :) Recent repairs include: New Ignition; New window regulators both front doors; Right front tie-rod end and alignment; Pads and rotors; NYS inspection 11/2010. Includes: Spare tire (doughnut); 2 snows (currently mounted); Single cd/radio with iPod connection; 2 cubies (4.5 gallons) of high quality svo; Roof rack with homemade ski clamps.

It may be clean and well done, but there is no way in hell a 15 year old VW with almost a quarter million miles is worth $6K

75k miles in the banner headline. 103k miles in the "body" of the ad. otherwise, a GREAT ad.

Here's my CL experience for the day. I just posted my wifes Accord for sale without my phone number because I don't want my cell number all over the place and I can't field calls during the day anyway. I get this immediate response:

"Call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx cell.Thanx."

Which I suspect might be a scam since he didn't even mention the car or anything. So I responded:

"Sorry, but there are too many scams on Craigslist to be calling up people unless I have more info. Let me know what questions you have via e-mail and we'll go from there."

Well, he really didn't like that. Here's his response (verbatim): "I dont understud what you tooking,if you have car for sale you need put ;ceel. or home phone number for contact.Thanx, i dont interesting more for your car is wery expensive.Good luck."

I kindly replied I can't talk at work and his e-mail resembled several scams I had received in the past. I also told him, people like him are why I don't give out my number and that the car is the most affordable Accord on CL for that model.

Good thing I have several other buyers interested. I did put my number in my posting once. I got 15 calls the first hour. Mostly just offering me half my asking price. I guess it must work sometimes or they wouldn't do it.

Will consider trading for a fast car? I am scared of this guy with a fast car.

Not worried about looks? Obviously.

"custom" Escort with a bad clutch among other things for $2500

http://dayton.craigslist.org/cto/2191080780.html

98 zx2 coupe. bought from cousin. he bought it with blown motor and we found a new engine with only 2,500 miles on it. i kid you not. since then he has put around 15k on it and i have put around 30k on it in three years. tune ups done every 4k miles.tranny has every bit of 156k on it tho. only bad is clutch. gears are still good. well upkept. ball joints and clutch are about to replaced after taxes. 2.0 zetec vct dohc motor. runs amazing. beat every non-boosted honda ive ran. very quick and lots of torque. its a car that has much potential. if you got the money and the right knowledge of what to do to make it go just that much faster, itll be your very own monster. i love it with a passion and hate to see it go. i just wanna switch things up and start fresh.

weapons r cold air intake. custom cat-back exhaust unknown cannon muffler new rear spindles LCAs and trailing arms. custom painted interior ( not completely finished but if offered something serious, i will finish asap) custom shift knob. pioneer premier headunit alpine type s door speakers. custom crown royal shift boot. aftermarket pedals

the minor: car had little dents everywhere i do body work everyday of my life so the body is now straight and very clean. no rust what so ever. even underneath. it is painted two tone primer gray and factory black gray bottom black top there is a very clean japanese rising sun on the hood. but only because we have a sense of humor around here.

the bad: the ball joints need replaced the clutch is going out. just let it warm up a bit and it grabs good comes with stock steelies but only needs two new ones. other two have about 90% life left.

very fun to drive and even better when you get to mess with the hondas textonly . 937-926-3599 THE 17IN ENKIE'S DO NOT COME WITH. ONLY THREE ARE USE-ABLE. THEY NEED TIRES AND THE FOURTH IS DESTROYED.

Okay, so the price isn't too bad (not too good either), but since when does a 2.2L Grand Am count as a "muscle car"?
