Like a real Mayor should:

he's like a Real American Hero! Okay, maybe not, but he was pretty awesome for stepping up. Too bad he got "tuned up" over it.
Of course when compared to the lying piece of smurf dung that is Portland's Mayor, howdy doody would be more confidence inspiring....
Wait what? A politician that actually does something for the people? That is scary. I think the world might implode there is no way it could hold that kind of stress against natural behavior.
It's the Apocalypse. Repent now!
Think he would be willing to run for president?
Well then someone sent me this about the new head of FEMA that get this is actually qualified for his job and thinks that people should take initiative and personal accountability.

Damn. First "Hope and Change" that really seems to nail it. Well done Obama.
Wow, sound like the right man for the job. Hope we never have to find out.
I hope he gets his message out. The only person you can count on on an emergency is YOU. Having been stuck at work for days following two grade A clusterf***s I made sure my house is prepared for any emergancy, and that my wife can fend for herself, from dealing with the well not working when power dies, to handling the shot gun, and when to leave, where to go and what to take.
Can't be real. Nope. FEMA just shy of Congress as the most incompetent government agency ever.
BTW: Monday is the 40th anniversary of Camille here in Mississippi. Heck of a month.
i LOL'd at this:
"Then he became a paramedic, earning the nickname “Dr. Death” for having to pronounce more people dead on his first day than anyone before him. "
maybe he wasn't such a good paramedic. at least when he started.

If they had told me on my first day that all I had to do was kill a few folks and the kick ass name "Dr. Death" would stick with me my whole career, I'd have started swinging the ax like a Canexican trying to remove the HVAC system from a CRX.

That deserves to be in the mag
Wanna make America stronger in the face of disaster? Take every american out camping for 4 days with a tent, a flashlight, a good survival knife, some matches/lighter, a small set of fishing tackle, a small pan, a canteen, small water purifyer and a harmonica...and nothing else.
Seriously...by the 2nd half of day 3, even the most prissy, mini van driving, cappuccino drinking, Crackberry addicted soccermom willl decide she WANTS to learn to fish for food, pop a tent to stay dry, build a real fire to stay warm and crap in the woods. Her last 2 and a half days were hell...she learned mobile email, she can learn to bait a hook too if it will fill her belly.
Once people decide for themselves they want to do this when its fun, when the situation is real, responsible self preservation will be second nature. Teach people not to panic and to fend for themselves, and FEMAs job wont be nearly as tough.

Man I did that many years ago with just the knife and tackle. These days I would add the H2O filter and maybe something that goes bang.

Wait that much? I never took that much when I first started going camping. There was a time when I went camping for about a month in northern BC with about as much as you have listed there.

at my boyscout camp we did a thing where we were not allowed to have modern materials (even matches) clothes on your back (NO SYNTHETICS!, well.. we got allowances for underpants..) basically a good knife, a hatchet, some twine, and a flint and knucklebuster. THAT was camping! build your OWN shelter..

I spent some quality time at Camp Pendelton (though I was US Navy) at Search, Evasion and Rescue school. All this, "flint, hatchet and a tent" are luxuries. We ate bugs and lizards for two freaking weeks. I purified water with Iodine tablets. I have no fear of losing power for an extended period of time, my training will make sure we survive. Well that and my black and decker 5000 Watt generator behind the garage :)

That is close to what I did in senior (eagle) scouts, it was awesome, nothing like building your own shelter, finding your own food and starting your own campfire to make you tougher. Cause it helped that we were co-ed
