I need a new set of trimmers. My last two have done the job but not well.
I keep a relatively short beard, I have no idea how guys deal with those long ones. And since my hair is thinning out, during the pandemic last year, I just said to hell with it and started clipping it about the same thing as my beard.
Any suggestions? I don't mind spending money on a nice one that will last a while.
I had a professional grade Wahl that lasted for 20 years of monthly haircuts. I forget the model number. The plastic combs/guards fit snugly. I picked up a consumer grade Wahl from one of the big box stores and the guards don't fit as nicely.
I bought the first one at a beauty supply store, so it really was "professional" grade. My suggestion is to get yours there.
Easy button is to get an Oster 76 and the appropriate combs/guards to go with it.
I've been using Wahl clippers on my beard since I have had one, and on my head for longer than I have had a beard. It's a simple corded model that looks very 1990s. It's on its second set of blades and needs another set soon, so I guess you get about 10 years out of a set. It doesn't look like they offer the same model any more, but there are similar basic ones for about $50.

I don't know why I didn't think of this. My ex-wife was a hairstylist. Explains why the original set of beard clippers she got lasted so long.
Thanks gents!
Pro-grade Wahl here. 10 years and ticking. I trim frequently, often weekly.

I have a Wahl, so far so good. But in the event it fails, next time I'll probably get an Oster 76, those things are beefcake.
I had a wahl for my face but it died after 4 years or so. I replaced it with this, and it works pretty well:

only had this about 1.5 years, but its working well so far.

I have the same one. I like it. Only had it about 2 years but working well.
https://www.farmvet.com/AGC-Super-2-Speed-Animal-Clipper?location=&quantity=1&custcol_ec_opt_grooming_size=45 These are what I've been using for my hair for the last.... 15(?) years now. They also get used on the dogs. Replaced the cutter once (its about due again).
For my face https://www.usa.philips.com/c-m-pe/face-stylers-and-grooming-kits/beard-hair-groomer I've used this one for about 5 years. Both are using the 1/4" cutters. I like it short

I swear this topic came up recently and I said the same. I've had my Oster for over a decade. Hasn't missed a beat. It's nice because it is powerful so you can trim quicker and not worry about snags/pulling.

That Oster looks beefy, I like it! Looks might I still might need, maybe a smaller cheapy for detail work around the upper lip nose?
Whenever I want a shorter beard I weld with goggles.
I've had this one for four years and love it - but when I bought it, it was only $30 - now it's $199?!?

I've had many sets of trimmers and clippers including Wahl and Oster.
I'll take the Philips over all of them.
Right now I have a Norelco 7000 series that I like alot.
I also have a Philips hair trimmer that I used for many years cutting my own hair while I was in the AF. I'm not sure on the model but I bought it in Europe.

It doesn't look like the guard comes off so I can clean up around the upper lip and nose?
In reply to z31maniac :
Correct. I also have the T-trimmer for detail work. They're a great combo.
For me the Oster name is a non-starter, since the name conjures up images of only one appliance--the blender. And I ain't stickin' my beard in no blender.
I've used an Oster Fast Feed trimmer for the last 3 years of beard trims. So far so good.

The guard comes completely off. What I like best (besides the small incremental length adjustments) is that the battery life is really good. I trim my beard 1-2 times a week and go months between charges, even after 4 years.
I trim with scissors. It's not a neat job, mostly just to keep the crumcatcher out of my facehole and keep the long stragglers in check. Once every other month when I get my hair cut the barber does a proper job on the beard.
I use one of these. It works very well.
