So I tried to get winter tires recently, and the worker at Firestone claimed that no one makes a winter tire in 205/45R16. And while there appears to be a few tires in this size, most websites say they won't fit my Miata.

Do I really need Winter tires? My gut says yes, especially with the winter that's being predicted. However with no tires in my size (sort of), I'm sort of boned. So I would have to buy another set of rims, which would put a pretty good strain on the wallet. Even used ones. Can I survive on all seasons, or am I doomed? BTW, driving conditions are mostly cleared roads, with slushs and fluffy snow and occasional OMG Winter hates me conditions.

Also, will earlier year rims fit on my car? There's a 94 and a 91 being parted out near me.

Yes, you want snows!

You must look elsewhere(ie, not at a FS store) for tires in that size. IIRC, Dunlop makes some stuff, and you shouldn't have to look hard to find something in an offbrand for reasonable money.

Happy hunting!

EDIT!!: My how the tire game has changed since I got out a few years ago! Some quick hunting reveals ZERO snows in that size. I'd think that if you want to keep those wheels, you'd have little choice but to step up to a 205/50/16.

Blizzak WS60 comes in 185/55/16. About 3% larger, and narrower is better in snow.

Will they mount those on my wheels? Unfortunately that FS is the only big name tire shop in town. Will they look at me like I'm an idiot for asking?

Get 14 inch steel wheels for 50 bucks from some Honda or VW kid, get cheaper tires to even out the difference.

I would always recommend Hankook Winter i-Pike

and yes, you need snow tires. especially in a Miata.

Yeah, I'd get some cheap 15in or 14in rims and throw snow tires on that. Saves the finish on your hopefully nice 16's and your more likely to tap a curb in the winter anyway.

I bet if you look long enough you could find something in 205/45. But sooner the better, and 185/55 is a good option too. 14/15 would be your best bet though.
