Doing some garage spring cleaning.  Need tunes in the garage.  I've decided to build a stereo box with an old head unit.  Self contained with speakers.  As I was mentally building it and finding random stuff as I clean up, I found a few small 12v batteries.  Which made me think why not a portable box?

I've got the stereo, the batteries, a "wicked set of tools" and several old 12v wall warts.  At first, I thought I could wire the wall wart and stereo to the battery and plug it in for goodness.  However, I started to think that constantly charging the battery might be a bad thing.  If so, what should I look for to stick between the wall wart and battery to make sure the battery doesn't overcharge while also providing constant power to the stereo when turned on?  I just don't know what to search for online.  I figure there's a cheap or even a DIY option, just don't know the key word to look for.  Looking for battery charge controller brings up expensive options.  I wanted something cheap.

OR, would direct wiring to the wall wart be fine and it'll keep from overcharging the battery while also giving the stereo power?

If there's not a cheapie option, I'll just go direct and forgo the battery portion.  Just an oddball project idea.

I would think that a trickle charger like the one they sell at Horror Fright for less than ten bucks would be fine.  Not sure it's any more sophisticated than a 12vdc wall wart though.
