I'm a 90s kid. I discovered music then, and without an older brother to clue me in to cool music, I was on my own. I remember watching a bunch of MTV  back when they played videos, and digging the early alternative and grunge music. I was too young to go to concerts, and too poor to buy the CDs.

I need songs to check out. I know the big bands, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc... I  need songs/bands like King Missle's Detachable Penis, or Whale's Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe.

YouTubes videos are a must. Help me remember the oddball songs, one hit wonders, and no hit wonders.

I'm on my phone, so no YouTube embeds yet, but here's a few to get you started.

Squirrel nut zippers - zoot suit riots

Seven marry three - cumbersome; Rodrigo

Everclear.

Harvey danger - flagpole sitta

Butthole surfers - pepper

Blind melon - No rain

Any mighty mighty bosstones that isn't "the impression that I get"

I'm still half asleep. I need to check my YouTube history and some old downloads of Beavis and Butthead, unless you stumble across my old CD collection.

Holy e36m3 this is awesome

Go back to the 80's and check out the Replacements. Or if you want to hear where Green Day came from, Husker Du.

Prince wasn't the only thing going on in MSP.

Sugar Ray (yes, Fly sucked, but they had some good stuff on their albums)

Chumbawumba

L7 - pretend that we're dead

The verve pipe

311

If you want something softer Third Eye Blind

90s Rancid was the best Rancid

Same with Marylin Manson, particularly Smells Like Children and the Antichrist trilogy.

Citizen Kane - bottom drops out

Goldfinger - superman

Quad city DJs - the train

I just gonna keep coming back to this thread. My second favorite decade for music after the Vietnam years.

Probably one of the greatest songs from the '90's (1995)...from a band you've never heard of...and a band that somehow never had another hit.  Hum: Stars

Be sure to check out this live performance on Conan.  Probably their national TV debut and they look like the just rolled out of the Ford Econoline Van they'd been touring in for the last 3 months.  T-shirt and jorts!

No one has said Alice in Chains yet?  What world is this?!?!?

The Cranberries (RIP Dolores) they're much more than just Zombies

Stone Temple Pilots - I've got their entire discography

Audioslave - you already like Soundgarden you'll like Audioslave wink

Bush - Razorblade Suitcase was in HEAVY rotation in my youth

A Perfect Circle

Deftones

Live - They get a bad wrap, Throwing Copper was a good album, and Dolphins Cry was alright too.

Seether - A little on the heavier/rock end of the Alternative spectrum, great live performers too

Breaking Benjamin - I have their entire discography and have seen them live 3 times.  Similar to Seether, a little more rock.

Foo Fighters - I feel that this should go without saying, but I'll include them just in case.

So you've all got a little more insight into Lee. laugh

“Sponge”, rotting piñata if i remember right.

The older albums from cake are fantastic.

soul coughing, meat puppets, dinasour jr, Sugar, everclear. recently threw “sparkle and fade” into my 95 e36 for period correct music and WOW thats a rockin album!

one of my absolute favorites and a staple for 90’s music, THE TOADIES! The radio hit was my least favorite. Whole album is so good.

And for rap from that era that i still listen do cause im 100% dad music, wu tang, nas, outkast, biggie, big pun. Plenty more if i were to think about it.

And yacht rock is always good. Hall and oates!

In reply to Mndsm :

Boy, I hate that song.  Since CTDunmmies were Canadian, that song got a ton of air play on the Canadian Station that my '90's music came from.  You see, Canadian stations are required to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists so they were usually starved for anything Canadian.

It sounds like you need some 80's-90's indie rock.

Check out The Wrens (Secaucus), Pavement (Slanted & Enchanted), Archers of Loaf (Icky Mettle), Jawbox (For Your Own Special Sweetheart), Fugazi (Repeater), Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation), Heatmiser (Mic City Sons), The Dismemberment Plan (Emergency & I), etc...there are a few outliers that are an acquired taste like Shudder To Think or the British shoegaze/noise rock bands like Ride or My Bloody Valentine that are kind of a different thing but that should get you started.
