No one has said Alice in Chains yet? What world is this?!?!?
The Cranberries (RIP Dolores) they're much more than just Zombies
Stone Temple Pilots - I've got their entire discography
Audioslave - you already like Soundgarden you'll like Audioslave
Bush - Razorblade Suitcase was in HEAVY rotation in my youth
A Perfect Circle
Deftones
Live - They get a bad wrap, Throwing Copper was a good album, and Dolphins Cry was alright too.
Seether - A little on the heavier/rock end of the Alternative spectrum, great live performers too
Breaking Benjamin - I have their entire discography and have seen them live 3 times. Similar to Seether, a little more rock.
Foo Fighters - I feel that this should go without saying, but I'll include them just in case.
So you've all got a little more insight into Lee.
He said he knew the "Big Bands" which is basically everyone on your list.
BB didn't release their first album until 2002.
Also, The Melvins! Buzz and company kill it live.

Mastodon also does a killer cover of this song.

Squirrel nut zippers - zoot suit riots
Zoot Suit Riot was actually by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
Squirrel Nut Zippers did Hell.
The Waxtrax label in Chicago had some great bands. KMFDM, Front242, Revolting Cocks, My Life With The The Thrill Kill Cult...
The Violent Femmes are timeless for me, as are the Pixies.
All of the I.R.S. label artists. Fine young Cannibals, The Cramps, even R.E.M.
Mudhoney, fIREHOSE, The Jesus and Mary Chain...

MC 900 Foot Jesus - The City Sleeps
MC 900 Foot Jesus - If I Only Had A Brain
MC 900 Foot Jesus - Adventures In Failure
Plastique Bertrand - Ça Plane Pour Moi
Yep, Violent Femmes....If we're limiting things to the early 90s, their 1991 album "Why Do Birds Sing?" is excellent:
Out the Window
Lack of Knowledge
Late in the 90's, a buddy of mine was big into ska/punk, and turned me on to Less Than Jake. To this day, when I'm feeling nostalgic, I cue up an album or two and reminisce about bombing through New England in my ratty old Suburban, blasting LTJ tapes on the Pioneer cassette deck and smoking USA Golds.
Love this one in particular.

The Melvins really do kill it live.
Here's a video view in to early '90 SoCal.
1994 Video of Sublime w/ Gwen S
Neither band, Sublime or No Doubt has yet hit it big. They are both locally popular playing bars in SoCal. Gwen is about 23 yrs old. The following year, 1995 both bads hit national fame. In 1996 Bradley dies (heroin OD) just days before Sublimes fantastic album debuts. This song What I got hits #1 and there is no lead singer to tour. He's dead.
After his passing, the earlier album 40oz to Freedom started to get play also.
Oh my goodness. MC 900 Foot Jesus and The The- two truly amazing artists that I completely forgot about.
I first heard The The live as an opening act, I was completely floored. After that show I went out and bought everything I could find by them on cd.
Dig deep.
Hey Sandy by Polaris (Adventures of Pete & Pete theme)
Bikini Kill
Deeper Shade of Soul by Urban Dance Squad
You Suck by the Murmurs
Pavement
Nada Surf
Letters From Cleo
Save Ferris
Seel Out by Reel Big Fish
Think of the weird crap you'd see on 120 minutes.
In reply to Appleseed :
I just came back to mention Save Ferris and Letters to Cleo

In reply to paranoid_android :
Especially since most of The The's first couple albums (Soul Mining, Infected) was just Matt Johnson playing everything himself with a few guest sit-ins.
(Not so 120 minutes)
G. Love and the Special Sauce, Morphine.
Guided By Voices
(Probably 120 minutes)
Meat Puppets
Butthole Surfers
Ween
Mighty Lemon Drops
Helmet - Unsung album. The whole thing is pretty awesome.
Although it's a bit heavier than say the Spin Doctors.
holy cow, you guys are killing it today!
The two out of print Dead Milkmen albums "Soul Rotation" and "Not Richard, But Dick," of 1992 and 1993 and released on Hollywood Records, are worth seeking out.
The Woman Who Was Also a Mongoose
The Secret of Life
Very much in the 80's, but:
Repo Man soundtrack! Particularly Burning Sensations "Pablo Picasso"-- still one of my most favorite songs of all time!
Dead Kennedys!
You guys wanna go deep in the 90s? Do you like bad recordings transferred from old cassette tapes? Boy do I have a treat for you!
Bad 90s Warren* High School Garage Bands
Joe Bakes 9 - Why Not Me?
Joe Bakes 9 - Gotta Figure Out
Pusher - Dadadada
*Christian metal band ZAO came out of here around the same time, but if memory is correct, once they got signed to Tooth and Nail pretty bunch all the original members were replaced.
Funny you should mention this. Friends of mine that run an Americana/roots station locally are launching a 90's alternative rock station one week from today. Deep cuts and one-hit wonders are kind of their specialty, and the play library is already over 3000 songs and they're not done adding. They will also be doing an 80's Lunchbox program weekdays focussing on 80s alternative and punk. You should be able to stream it online too. I'll post back here when the webbroadcast is up and running, but if you happen to be near Macon GA it's going to be 100.5 the X. Yes, it's kind of modeled on Atlanta's 99X from back in the late 90s.
If, and that's a big if, you can find a copy of their live album, Alcohol Abuse Live, the Buzzpoets are worth looking at.
90s Pittsburgh alternative, studio albums while featuring some good songs are kinda meh compared to live thou.
There's another band, Live.
And toad and the wet sprocket, better than Ezra, temple of the dog...
OK, so 1985 but still important:
