I'm thinking of buying a condo that will get new paint and carpet. Any suggestions for eliminating the odors left by the previous owners?

Lots of weird smell questions lately.

Done this as well 60 year old house original owners who smoked.

First if its popcorn ceilings your going to need to strip it off.

TSP the walls really well. I got one of those micro fiber towel parks and rigged then to a pole so that I could do multiple passes quickly.

Prime everything.

Paint, including ceilings.

For the carpet, getting it out will do a ton, take the pad out at the same time. No amount of cleaning will ever get a pad clean.

Scrub the subfloor really well with TSP or any other relevent cleaner.

In the meantime there is a product called "ONA" its made for eliminating the smell of pot from the air, all the local hydroponic places have them. They WORK, and the last for months. Never had anything better for cleaning the air.

(Side Note, I have a ton of ONA for the rescue cats and it works great, we also used to use them in my old labs vivisection room)

That's called "rustic charm". As long as the walls don't drip blood, I'd figure it'll go away in time. Besides, you'll stink it up soon enough with your own funk.

Paint and carpet will do wonders. Once you move in, get some incontinent pets, and soon all the odors will be yours.

That would be the responsibility of my mother-in-law, a task which I'm sure she is capable of.

Her incontinent cat would not be invited.

weary's got it right. TSP is the way to go. I have also used greased lightning on painted walls. Spray it on and watch the crap slide down the wall. I scrub with a brush, then wipe it down with wet terry clothes. Then prime, I prefer Kilz latex. Tear the carpet out, and let it breath as long as possible before your install the new carpet. If it has central AC clean the return out good, change the filter (duh) and clean the coil.

good luck, its damn hot out

Does very little to eliminate smoke odors.
