Thanks all. Expanding my search to Patriot, Grand Cherokee, Escape and Vue. The Liberty is still on the table too. I'll be looking in the 40K +/- mile range, nothing wrong w/ the high milers if that's your thing, but I wanna be the one to take it there from 40K. I'd plan on keeping it 4-5 years w/ routine maintenance and working seven days a week leaves zero time to tinker w/ a high miler.
Looking back, my '87 Eagle 4X4 Wagon was the perfect fit, too bad they're all used up here. Maybe hafta add the Forester to my list to keep w/ that wagon style.
Feel free to weigh in.

My dad has a CRD Liberty. Ordered it new, the first time in his 60 years he's done that. It has been in and out of the dealership with a litany of powertrain problems, some manufacture/warranty related, some problems of the dealership's own doing. Basically, this shop blows goats for a dollar, but he keeps taking it back there. I can't explain it, and I can't get him to take it anywhere else. Whatever, it's his car and his money.
When the thing works, though, he loves it. He drives a lot, has nearly 200k miles on it, and has a lifetime average of 28mpg, I think. The turbo motor moves it quite well, and I've done a little bit of light offroading in it, which it handled with aplomb (the tires are the weak link in that chain). Does great in the snow, and it's nice for long trips. It's actually a pretty great city car, as it has a tight turning radius and soaks up road irregularities and hops curbs without worry.
It is a bit tight inside, but nothing you can't get used to. I'm 6'2" 200# and I'm comfortable anywhere in the cabin. Materials are decent (for a Jeep) and they come pretty loaded up with features (for a Jeep).
I think the diesel gives his its character, so I can't really comment on the gas engines.
I like the the thing quite a lot, but then, I haven't been paying to have all those repairs done...
After exhaustive searching for decent/ right priced used, I ended up w/ a new 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4... luvin' it.
Thanks all for the input
