Figured since the athletes are starting to move in, might be good to start a thread. If for no other reason than I'm afraid it will be a giant clusterberkeley. I predict more athletes will decide not to compete once they get there.
First report, the Australian team checked in today. Found toilets blocked up, water leaking down the walls, exposed wiring and the smell of gasoline. Australians discovery
The best part was the Mayor's reaction:
We are going to make the Australians feel at home here. I'm almost putting a kangaroo out front to jump for them
Looks like we're in for some crazy news over the next month or so.

I am generally very non-interested in the Olympics anyway. I am really not interested in seeing endless "dramatic" back stories for athletes like it's some sort of reality competition show.
I heard the competitors in the sailing competition where getting some sort of anti-bacterial suits!
Rio... what a dump. The fact that the government (yes, the same one who's legislature is mostly under criminal investigation) is spending huge amounts of money on sports stadiums they will never use in a country with huge poverty issues is a bit disgusting.
At least the world cup will... oh, never mind...
The Olympics are inherently dramatic. You've got amateur athletes (for the most part) performing at their best on the world stage. Once you win an Olympic gold, you are always an Olympic gold medal winner. I love seeing the competition. But the TV coverage is just saccharine crap, and that keeps me from watching.

Rio is a wild and crazy city; I had a lot of fun there. Zeka and sewage could be the least of your problems if you wander around like a tourist. It is on the same scale as Lagos as far as needing to be aware of your surroundings at all times. As a tourist, you travel in pairs or groups.
I would not take my family there for love or money.
I have a friend competing in Track for St. Lucia, I hope that he does well and stays safe.
There are something like 450,000 condoms being distributed in the Olympic village. Sounds like that place should be a party!!

I kinda agree, until I think about the money aspect of it. Drama means exposure. Exposure means sponsorship deals from companies. Sponsorship means money for the athletes. Money allows them to concentrate on their sport more so they can be the best in the world. When you compare it to countries that have state sponsored athletes, it's a way for American's to compete.
When I think of it in those terms, I get less frustrated by it. I'm sure that Michael Phelps wouldn't have been able to dedicate the time to swimming and be as successful as he had without endorsements. Sure, it's possible he might have, but having the financial stability to know he can concentrate full time on swimming had to have helped, tremendously.

There are absolutely absurd amounts of humping during the Olympics. Gives a whole new meaning to "do it for your country".
I love the Olympics, I am not sure Rio will pull it off, or something really really bad will happen.

He doesn't happen to be a former NFL running back, does he?

That should cover the US team...what will the rest of the athletes do?
I still don't get the olympics, other than being a distraction every election year. Like good for you, you can run fast or swim fast. These are survival skills, not career options, and with this whole workout trend thing, it's a lot more fun watching first timers than people running for a living. A girl I grew up with made the cut in 12 for luge, or was supposed to make the cut I don't really pay attention. Skateboarding on your back. Not even a survival skill, just an interesting way to die.
But what do I know, I think hockey is a real sport.
I heard a report on NPR from a reporter who had taken a boat ride in the bay where they will be having the sailing and distance swimming competitions. He saw a dead horse floating in the water! He also saw a bunch of 55 gallon drums floating around, and oil slicks. The reporter also mentioned how one of the rowing teams had become ill after practicing.
Sounds lovely!
I know someone locally who is going to volunteer in the olympic village with a church mission group. There are like 1500 of them going from across the country. Not a chance I'd be there.

He does, he's had quite the battle with concussions and their after effects going back to his days at Cal. It's been quite the road back for him as running at any speed was causing dizziness for over a year.

Tell him that this Lions fan will be rooting hard for him. Hell of a talented guy, lots of bad luck, though.
Before we jump to heavily on the Olympic village, don't forget that the "village" for the 1980 Winter games is a prison. It's the Ray Brook Federal Correctional Institution.
The olympics need to take some time off. Reorganize, replace every executive, institute a spending cap for host countries, and prosecute graft in an international criminal court. It stopped being about atheletes years ago.

I'll pass along the well wishes. I'm proud of him for getting back to this level of competition, I was impressed when he decided that he wanted to even attempt to qualify. He put in a time of time, effort and money into his training. The travel alone involved in his training prep, from oregon and California to Atlanta was an impressive undertaking in preparation.

Jahvid Best I assume? Always kind of liked him for no particular reason other than he was fun to watch. Shame the NFL didn't work out, very talented player, but I'm glad to hear he's doing ok and competing again.
