I believe Kalashnikov got the idea for the general layout from the MP44, internally it resembles a M1 Garand, and the big safety/selector lever is straight off a Remington model 8.

I remember a Tales of the Gun episode on History Channel where he was asked that question. He insisted the MP44 was not an influence. Seemed like a sure-fire way to get him riled up.
