So that's a pretty significant detour according to Google maps. Basically if I want to go from Philly to Charleston it's saying 76 to 81 to 77 to 26 to Charleston.
You're saying 76 to 81 to 64 (charlottesville) to 95 to 26? Is that right?

imo the 81 detour is worthwhile if you do it from CT/RI and return to 95 via 64 in VA, heading west from Philly then back east at 64 is silly, you're nearly tripling the mileage to avoid Baltimore and DC. The original detour had you avoiding NYC, Philly, Baltimore and DC. You won't be making better then 80mph on the detour and despite frustrating soul sucking traffic you'll likely average better than 30mph through Baltimore and DC.
Here's the better avoid DC traffic option if you must stop in Philly, once south of Baltimore take I97 south to 301, ride 301 south to Richmond.

^^ If you have to stop in Philly this is a better route. Straight out of CT/RI heading south 81 is better.
If you are looking for some good food for breakfast, here is a good donut shop in Philly: http://www.federaldonuts.com/main/#
They make donuts and fried chicken. That is all that is on the menu.
If you are looking for the best cheesesteak around, head to Delassandro's: http://dalessandros.com/
I highly recommend the Memphis Taproom as well: http://memphistaproom.com/
