Lulus (spelling?) has great chicken fried chicken/steak and amazing 3lbs cinnamon rolls. Seriously it's worth it.
Tiffany (no plural) near Medina annex is a sketch hole in the wall joint for a beer.
Riverwalk is all your touristy stuff.
If you have a rental car, the Spanish missions are well worth a visit. Amazing spanish architecture, some restored, some not. link all way better than the Alamo (give the Alamo a skip if you find yourself pondering: "should I do the Alamo, or something else...)
The riverwalk is a "go-to" destination for tourists, and is a nice walk if you've never been there before. the movie "Cloak and Dagger" was filmed down there back in the 80's. But otherwise there's nothing special down there but a few chain restaurants/bars. I usually put this on my skip list when visiting.
The pick and pull there is decent. You can find some neat stuff there sometimes as most of the people there are interested in Ford/Dodge/Chevy. So the asian and european imports used to be cool little treasure boxes for me to play in. Also, the buicks/olds/etc that got the eaton superchargers are generally overlooked as well.
If you want to drive some twisties go out highway 16 (aka Bandera boulevard) and turn right when you get to Bandera. It's a one-street cowboy town, you wont miss it. From there, enjoy the hill-country drive. It's quite nice. Stop at a river crossing for lunch or just punch on through. Kerrville marks the end of the trip, and you can drive back in to SA on boring old Interstate-10, arriving not too far away from where you left.
If you do the drive, I highly recommend the Old Spanish Trail in Bandera for breakfast. Something about eating a good 'ol greasy breakfast on a saddle at a bar in an old cowboy town just tickles me pink. Also someone out there used to give rides on his bull for a small fee.
More on the drive: If you're driving through Medina (about the mid-way point) there's a bakery on the left that's very decent. Overstuffed apple pie is the best. On the right is a HUGE wooden chair outside a furniture shop. It's worth a picture.
If shooting sports is more your thing, head out to the bullet hole and rent a machine gun. Used to be about $20 a mag. The rules are loose there so watch the range safety. It's sometimes frighteningly lacking (I don't go there anymore after two near-miss incidents).
Also worth a picture are the "largest cowboy boots in Texas" outside the NorthStar mall.
Have fun man. Say high to all my exes! (unlike George Strait, only a large portion of my exes still reside in Texas)
Food? If in doubt go mexican. Forget the barbecue.
KKYX is a great radio station that'll play some honest-to-goodness country without all that hipster crap they got on the air these days. The outlaws, Tom T. Hall, the works.
Cheers!

Then you didn't see the basement, did you?
The bar at the Menger is pretty cool and one of the oldest still in operation. Pretty much a cool dive bar with history.
