Wow, that cost a lot of money. At least the outcome was fairly positive, save for the injuries to the officers.

The youtube video starts about two block from my office! I recognized that intersection immediately, I drive though there a couple times a day at least.

Scratch one Camaro!

Any idea what the chase vehicle in the first part of the video is? Sounds a bit too... mean to be a P71 to me, but I could be wrong.

Not that I have any sympathy for a carjacker, and end result may save some taxpayer dollars, but noticing the driver of the SUV - if she hadn't bailed out, it seems there was a fair amount of lead travelling in her direction. Bad guy was hemmed in - could have been hemmed in a bit better, would there have been a need to fire off those rounds?

I thought about that as well. I guess I assumed (hoped?) that the officer near her signalled to the others that the target was clear after she bailed. At first I wondered why she didn't just drive out of the way, but there may have been another car in front of her blocking her in, or the hit she took may have tripped the fuel cutoff in her car.

As for opening fire on the carjacker, apparently he had already shot at the cops, so when he started moving the car again after he was clearly trapped, they just emptied their magazines into it. I'm sure adrenaline played a role.

In the story she said the police told her to leave then his behind her vehicle.

Not that I would have even done that well, but it seemed like Officer #1 missed a couple good opportunities to hit the guy pretty hard in the side, and he took himself out of action with the rear-ender.

My wife was on her way to U-Village at the time that the chase was moving north to Ravenna. She called me in a panic because 20 police cars passed her at full clip. She was worried there was another mass shooting at the mall and turned back.

You can clearly see this in the video. He has his arm out the window of the car shooting at them as they are driving.

What's also impressive is how quickly the video has been posted. Hopefully, it'll show that cops do the right thing more often than not and start bringing more "confidence" in the police to the general populous.

It looks like they made sure to get her out of the way as quickly as they could and then concentrated the fire to a direct location. In a situation like that, you have no idea what the guy might do next so you have to take chances.

SPD has been under a lot of scrutiny, most of it rightfully so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Police_Department

In December 2011 the SPD was subject to a Department of Justice investigation that found officers had violated the 14th Amendment and the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The DOJ found that SPD officers engaged in a pattern of excessive use of force that violated the Constitution as well as Federal law. Furthermore, the regular invocation of the Garrity protection was found to have reduced the department's ability to supervise the use of force and hinder investigations. A spokesman for the SPD indicated they will fully comply with the DOJ inquiry to avoid a federal lawsuit.[21] In late July 2012, the city and Department of Justice reached a settlement that included improved oversight, training and reporting.[22]

Basically the DOJ smacked them down and now they are continuously trying to prove they are doing the right thing.

I agree, i don't get the decision to do that rear ender.

Keep following. The crazy person will make a mistake eventually. Then you will have them. At least that is what I would think would work.

I would imagine the priority is to try and stop them as quickly as possible before they kill someone.

I saw this on Facebook and holy crap, reading the comments, people just want to hate cops no matter what. This guy could have mowed over a group of school children carrying kittens and puppies and they would think shooting this guy up was unjust.
