Won't happen. If they go that fast the nanny state will require impact zones, passive safety devices including airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control.

I was at the state fair with my kids about 3 years ago. We're moseying the carnival looking at what rides they wanted to ride. "The ferris wheel costs 4 tickets." "The bumper cars cost 3 tickets." "The OMG-I'm-going-to-hurl centrifuge costs 5 tickets." etc...that was the conversation.
Then I see two state troopers cruising around (patrolling) on segways. I told my kids to go ask how many tickets it costs to ride that ride.
They wouldn't do it (wouldn't ask the HPs).
(Actually, they told me to I should ask the troopers...at which point I had to explain that if a person wants to be obnoxious, they had better be a lot cuter than I am.)

Yeah, you don't want to do 40 on a Segway. The crumple zones consist primarily of your face and crotch.

It's pretty far to go to ride a segway but there is a tour of the Poughkeepsie waterfront that I want to take one day.
We (ok our NASA region) have a pair of them for us to use on Grid. They are cool and useful but deceptivley dangerous and spiteful. I have been run over by my own segway twice and been tossed off the dang thing more times than I can count.
I'll just leave this here:

Why is it that people look like such damn nerds while riding them? There has to be something scientific about it.
might be because it appeals to the nerd in all of us?
Personally, I don't see myself riding one beyond trying it out. You are talking to somebody will will take 7 floors of stairs rather than the elevator

Maybe it is the helmet and eye protection combined with the "I'm from the future" aspect.
