Music BETTER in 1986? This is perhaps the most puzzling thing I've ever read.

It's not a puzzle. It's a known fact.

Yeah, that was a whole year before Rick Astley burst onto the scene.

86! graduated HS in 87! Mets win the World Series and the Gmen win the Superbowl. What better year for a kid from LI than that? BTW, not the Islanders winning--I'm a Ranger fan. I know, I know.
New wave--punk. Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, Oingo Boingo, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen.
I miss WLIR--92.7 ( We Like Inglish Records).

yea just listen to some of eminems lyrics
I was 15, deep in my mullet/ heavy metal phase. Shortly after I started hearing things on movie soundtracks like The Cult, Iggy Pop, etc. A year later I got introduced to Black Flag. Then I moved to Atlanta and was introduced to real alternative music. I have kept some favorites from every style.
But with the exception of Iron Maiden, most of the lyrics of that era were just absolute crap.

Hey, I was a year behind you. Yep, WLIR. 1986 was a good time for metal, punk and something new known as alternative.

Yeah, I quit watching right after that...
When I'm heading south in VT I listen to WEQX. Much of the old stuff like WLIR, with modern versions of same. Unlike The Buzz in Burlington. They seem to think alternative means not classic rock.

Class of 87. The Mighty Maroon Marauders of Bay Shore High School!
I went to the last concert sponsored by then WDRE at The Garden to see Depeche Mode with Nitzer Ebb opening. We took my younger bro to Times Square to find a shop that would make him an driver's license. Fun times.
I worked my first race as an SCCA corner worker in 86.
And mark up another Punk/New Wave fan. I didn't even know the names of some of the metal/rap guys y'all mentioned until all the "Oldies from The 80s!" infomercials started running a few years back..
