It's a shipyard, welders, riggers, sailors, contractors, vendors, secretaries et al running in and out the gate all day.

Yes, it's a "military installation" but different than most.

In reply to 914Driver:

It doesn't appear to be much of a shipyard.....theres like 3 docks, a "drydock" about large enough for a WW2 PT boat, and a bunch of buildings. I'm assuming they deal with high tech weaponry in those buildings and ship most off to other places to be installed.

Seems like they are backing away from the initial "multiple shooter" reports. Seem to recall that happening in most of the similar situations. Initial reports: 2-3 shooters, later revised down to loan gunman. Guess it doesn't pay to watch the first 5-10 hours of coverage if you are trying to figure out what is actually going on.

Have a friend who works there. Hes fine but they are apparently on lockdown for another 6 hours at least. No word on what's going on but I guess if he's sharing that on Facebook I can share it here.

Do news people even watch the news?

My guess is that the shooter probably took a jacket off, changing their appearance, resulting in multiple descriptions from witnesses.

I was thinking an actual armed guard who belonged there was mistaken for a gunman.

I made the mistake of looking to Facebook for updates, and apparently a lot of my friends are SWAT team commanders and lobbyists, because everyone was either Monday morning QB'ing this thing, or trying to promote their own firearm agenda.

I'm taking a little social media break, but I really hate how we, as people, react sometimes.

Haha. I was avoiding FB, but watching CNN. The media coverage actually sounded pretty decent thanks to the retention of information from the LEOs. Cudos to the LEOs.

I basically work in a little cave at work so I was not able to really keep on on events. Every now and then the news app on my phone would chime in with an update but nothing substantial.

BBC named the shooter http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24120333

A gunman who died after killing 12 people at a naval installation in Washington DC has been identified as a former Navy serviceman. Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas, died in a gun battle with police during the rampage at Washington Navy Yard. About a dozen others were wounded in the attack, which began at around 8:20 local time (12:20 GMT) on Monday. [ .... ] Alexis was formerly a petty officer 3rd class who served full-time in the naval reserve from 2007-11, said the US Navy. It is not yet clear why he left the military, or how he gained access to the facility. Nor is a motive known for the attack.

How tragic.

Re this: "Mr. Putin blasted American exceptionalism and admonished Americans to remember that God has created everyone equal." Um, isn't this the same guy who has pretty much declared open season on gays?

It's anything but a shipyard, and hasn't been for close to a century. Little bits of yarding remain, but mostly in a museum capacity

And the media has every right to speculate. As opposed to erasing free speech and discussion until officially approved by the regulating agency of the government.

Navy yard is mostly administrative. The museum ship they have there wouldn't even be able to get to ocean anymore due to bridges.

Alright, got word via FB- he's tired. Obviously a terrible thing to have happen. Turns out the shooting was on his floor, so he was literally right there. Quick thinking possibly saved his life. Who knows what happens now. I'll probably never get to hear the whole story.... not something you generally ask about.

I guess I shoulda watched the news tonight. I just read this thread so this is the first I've heard of it.

Oh wait! It's not 10:00 yet so I guess I'll tune in.

EDIT: WOW! He lived and worked maybe 5-6 miles from my house and the restaurant he worked at is one I frequent. He might have even served me.

Crazy.

My buddy posted on FB, while this is going on, a bunch of NRA type firearms agenda crap to the effect of" how do those strict gun laws work for you no?"

Thought you were better than that. Ugh.
