Help a cell-phone package challenged person out.
My cellphone is just about broken, it no longer works as a phone anyways (texting is fine). I have an opportunity to buy an old smartphone (Samsung Blackjack). Will I run into any issues since this is a smartphone and I do not have a data plan? I know that accessing the internet without being hooked up to a wireless connection would cost a lot, but is there any reason I cannot use just the phone and texting part of it?

It usually depends on whether the carrier will let you skip it or not. I had no data plan for my old Palm Treo, and only used the phone/text part on the air and the Palm part off the air. But when I got assimilated into the iBorg, AT&T required a data plan.
Are you with AT&T? Buy one of AT&T's prepaid phones that they call "Go Phone." Put your SIM chip into that handset and you should be off and running smoothly while still maintaining your current AT&T billing agreement.
These AT&T prepaid handsets are available at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, Radio Shack and more so check online for best prices which should start at about $15 for a simple handset - new!

To answer your earlier question, yes, I think AT&T will charge you more if you suddenly go to a smartphone.
I got grandfathered into my situation. My Nokia Surge came out just as they were mandating data plans.
Sometimes I got told one thing and saw something different on my bill. I just raised a fuss and they'd just take care of me.
I even turned the data plan one a couple times, and then realized I was better without it. Raise a stink with AT&T and they'd shut it off.
I think I need to start looking elsewhere though when it comes time to renew my contract though.

This is what I do. I am an utter klutz, so every so often I break a phone. The last time this happened to me, I was ice skating and did the most epic faceplant ever, with my phone in my front pocket. Trip to Best Buy on the way home, and $15 later I've replaced my GoPhone with another one.
