People wonder why Southerners freak out when they get snow.
This is a real picture of what happens in Raleigh with just 3 inches.
The photo is not mine, but I do know the person who took it.

That pic is all over my FB feed. I made it about 10 yards in the last hour. Up off the couch to get another beer.
I can't even laugh at that. I just can't wrap my brain around being that paralyzed in such little snow.
It snowed all afternoon here in East Tenn with no accumulation but after 6pm, it has been snowing at 2" per hour rate. Brine, salt and plows cant keep up and the hilly roads just keep getting slicker. I have gone out 2x with broom to knock the snow off my 4runner so that I can get out tomorrow without frozen ice on the windows.
Sorry if you cant wrap your mind around that picture.
Well it's not just the snow, it's the ice that is catching a ton of people out. We have about 1/4" of ice in our driveway and cul de sac.
I seem to remember a car fire in Atlanta the other day, in the middle of their snow mess. Why the car fires? Kind of bizarre, two snowmageddons and two car fires.

I really shouldn't be laughing as hard as I am at this.

Almost nobody knows how to drive in snow, and even fewer have the tires to do so. There are no snow plows and the roads are not salted, so the snow stays where it is and just gets packed into ice. Speed limits on surface roads in the city are 45, and people think that means that that is the minimum speed, no matter what.
I grew up in the North. I didn't drive anywhere today because I knew it was going to be berkeleying bedlam out there.
My brother just moved to Raleigh after living in Chicago for 18 years, and Minnesota for 6 after that. He said it really is quite hilarious to him.

I think that the news said Glenwood. Looks like it might be way down near Angus Barn.

Yeah I get why it happens. I'm just a life long mn resident. So while Id probably be berkeleyed sideways in a hurricane, I just dont get not having snow tires, awd, sand and so on. Not bagging on anyone.
I managed to avoid most of that gridlock. I left Rex Hospital at 1 and it still took two hours to get to Apex. Looked like the problem was a combination of people who have little-no experience driving in the snow driving timidly and transplants who were going to show us rednecks how it's done and driving way too fast. Those folks put on some spectacular displays of loss of control to keep the rest of us entertained. The MSM did surprisingly well with summer tires, but I wouldn't have gone out at all if I hadn't had to. Looks like today will be worse, since it's all turned to ice, now. Good thing they weren't planning to discharge my dad from Rex until tomorrow.

Well, snow tires are expensive. We get snow maybe two-three days a year. Who is going to buy snow tires just for that? Who is going to buy an awd vehicle just for that? I know you said you aren't bagging on anyone, but you are an intelligent fellow. Surely you can wrap your brain around this scenario. We aren't forced to deal with snow for months on end, so therefore we aren't going to prepare in the same way as states that do.
As an analogy, let's say next year the roads suddenly became lava for two days out of the summer. Now, you are going to get about a week's warning when this might happen, But sometimes to forecast is wrong. And, in order to drive on the lava road you will need to update your car with some special, lava-resistant tires, and you will be wise to carry several buckets of water with you in case you get stuck. Now some people, especially those people from places where the road turns to lava on a regular basis, they are going to be experienced driving in those conditions. They may have already invested in the lava tires and already have buckets of water ready to go. Some people will say, "berkeley no, I'm not driving in that" and stay home. Some people will be surprised that it turned to lava as fast as it did when it was just fine an hour ago and they get stuck or have to abandon their disabled vehicle, and others will say, "berkeley it, I'm going anyway."

leave the snow on the windows... it keeps the ice off..
pro tip: throw an old blanket that you don't care about over the windshield, using the front doors to hold it in place. this keeps the ice and snow from accumulating on the windshield. the rest of the windows clear themselves off fast enough once the heater starts heating. a little vaseline on the weatherstripping keeps the doors from freezing shut, with a little dab over the lock cylinders to keep the moisture out..
i'm a lifelong MN resident, but i've never had snow tires and only ever had one AWD vehicle- a 92 AWD Astro van that had crap tires but was still invincible in the snow... had a few 4X4 trucks in my day, but my best snow beater was a 78 Caddy El Dorado with the 425- i tried getting it stuck in a 3 foot deep snow pile left by a snow plow on an icy street once, and it just idled thru it like nothing. i think it would make an excellent vehicle to mount a plow to..
How I keep ice off my windshield and the car warm at the same time. Plug it in and place in the passenger side footwell. Makes freezing cold mornings more tolerable.
The picture may be playing tricks.
But, you see the delivery truck on the upper left side, right next to it is a car that appears to be decked out to rally- two main lights, two lights inbetween those, and then what appears to be 3 light mounted on the roof.
(I know, examining it closer has one of the roof light are actually from the car behind the van.. but it appeared that someone was very prepared to be out)
FWIW, a recent snomagedded resulted in a massive accident in Michigan City, so it's not as if the northerners are immune to whatever you want to call this.

Yeah, but at least the Michigan City was due to 18" of snow over an 8 hour window with winds off the lake.
Had friends stuck in downtown Raleigh after work yesterday. Downtown actually has a decent amount of elevation change, so a few gradual hills. Friend in his 2wd truck was in bad shape with 3" of snow and an inch of ice underneath.
You think you can drive on snow? Good for you. Now go drive on a solid sheet of ice with all-seasons (uphill) and tell me how good of a driver you are.
