So a co-workers friend shot his wife and killed himself yesterday

I'm not, nor did I intend to get into the gun debate.

I was more interested in the whole suicide thing and why it seems to be becoming more common. What is happening in our culture that makes people feel trapped, and just in the last decade that we've seen this increasing trend?

You know the most important thing right now is what constitutes a faint fart? Is it a) Another term for the good old silent but deadly, b) Faint of odor but loud and proud, c ) All round faint and beneath consideration?

To be honest, its happened all along. In many places respect is still shown, hence the "Died after a brief illness" phrase normally seen in obituaries. It used to be kind of a taboo to mention suicides in the media.

Yes, that's what I was saying, though as was also mentioned, I was being more generic rather than referring to the actual article (which I will stipulate I didn't read). And it was a flounder.

I understand suicide. I don't understand suicide by murder. If you're going to put yourself out of your own misery anyway, that's your choice and I will grant you that. But why take somebody with you? Are you really going to gloat "yeah, I fixed that shiny happy person's wagon" for the few remaining minutes before you off yourself?

That and I believe before such events may have been kept more quiet than they have in recent years. People have been killing themselves and their family members since biblical times. Before this act was considered taboo and disgraceful for the remaining family members in many cases. This caused a level of secrecy that just may not be possible in today's society. That coupled with the previously mentioned increased media coverage and the product of being an instant media society. There is also the whole social media construct that allows people to communicate these events instantly. Today it seems many are not capable of handling the slightest disturbance to their lives without broadcasting it to the world. So when something big happens they ensure everyone hears about it. My sister in law is like that, she gets a splinter and you would think the world was ending.

I think someone should comb the gun threads to get the basic text/arguments from the same basic people and everytime a potential gun debate thread pops up just post the text in the first post. That way these threads can die quickly rather than popping up on "latest topics" for 8 pages worth of tired arguments.

Hell... that started in the 70's... I was on a little league team when I was 7 and 8. We sucked. I don't think we won a single game all season. Couldn't pitch, couldn't hit, marginal fielding. I think I still have that silly little trophy the league gave everyone on the team at the end.
