J. Grant Brittain, one of the major skateboard photographers, has an exhibit at the Orlando Museum of Art, and I guess they decided to put some zines on display as well. So I got the call: Mind sending over a few of your zines?
So I did.
Still need to get over to check it out. Sadly I couldn’t make the opening nor the Q&A with Tony Hawk.
Oh yeah, I make zines in my spare time. (I know, I know....)
Also, yo dawg, we heard you like zines

You missed the Q&A with Tony Hawk??? Were you hospitalized or something??
Congrats!
Sure, make me look it up.
TIL what a Zine is. And yes, congratulations.
Wikipedia.org: Zine
A zine (/ziːn/ ⓘ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.

Yup, like an independent, small run magazine. Most are smaller than traditional magazine size, but really very little rules. No ads (usually) is the biggie.
Print runs tend to be short. I have two in the mail from the printer, and each one is limited to 25 copies.
Topic covered can be whatever you want. I have three series: Stolen Memes (memes, obviously), 44:16 (BMX/punk rock and formatted very much like a traditional magazine) and photo zines (most featuring different local models). The 44:16 is the one on display at the museum.
I contributed to a BMX/skate zine while in high school, and it’s been very fun and rewarding to get back into it. We have a monthly zine meet-up in Orlando, and soon I’m hosting one here in Ormond Beach. Plus we have the Orlando Zine Fest in a week. I’ll be the oldest one there.
And a group shot of my zines. My dad’s been asking when I’m going to produce the next 44:16. Man, making magazines is tough work.
And both new zines landed today.
I heard it was just a guy that looked like Tony Hawk, so no biggie.

No biggie. Sadly, we just couldn’t make it over that day.
So speaking of zines and self-published books, my good friend Emon is hosting a pop-up in Washington Heights this Friday evening for his photo/poetry book.
If I didn’t have three events this weekend, I’d be up there in NYC this weekend.
Back in the day, though, we saw Tony Hawk and Bucky Lasek do a skate demo at Universal Studios Orlando.
I’d love to meet Glen E. Friedman, though. He also took a lot of the iconic skateboard photos back in the day–plus a lot of band pics, too, like Bad Brains, Beasie Boys, Suicidal Tendencies, Public Enemy, Minor Threat, RUN-DMC, etc. I’d call him one of my biggest influences. If not the biggest.
And come see me (and my zines) this Saturday: Orlando Zine Fest at Blackbook Comics & Coffee.
Sold some zines this weekend, too. More importantly, I think I inspired a few people to put their own thoughts down on paper.
Yeah man, this is awesome! Congrats!!! Every time you mention those zines, I am reminded of the one my local surf/skate shop used to put out about 25 years ago: Flat Magazine. I used to read it religiously. Keep it going!
